I got the bug for a pellet rifle after my Dad got one and let me try it. He told me about this forum. I'm an experienced rifle/shotgun/handgun shooter, but the components for ammo are prohibitively expensive. I ordered an Umarex Octane .22 last night and can't wait to get going with it. My knowledge gap is primarily related the proper care for air rifles. Specifically I'm worried about cleaning the umarex with its suppressor. My uses will be primarily for sport though we killed 3 chipmunks with my Dad's WRS and I'll like kill any more that I see. Please chime in with any suggestions or advice. Thanks!

Hello and welcome to the GTA!! When you receive your new rifle, before you shoot it, clean it. Pull a patch with Goo Gone from breech to muzzle with fishing line or weed whacker line. Follow it up by pulling several clean patches. Do not use your firearm solvents on an air rifle - they can eat the seals.
After it's clean, start running pellets through it. It will probably take twenty to forty to season the barrel, more to actually break it in.
Learn about the artillery hold. Spring powered airguns are a different beast. They can be mastered they just take a different technique.
Enjoy your new hobby / sport!!
