RWS vs. Nikko Stirling Scopes

It's been a while now, and I have had more experience using the RWS Scope. My first impressions were a bit too "Glowing" for this scope. cwlongshot's recommendation to avoid it was good advice. I had the family up for a early Thanksgiving, and we all ended up shooting all of my Air Rifles at the Long Targets out back. Using the guns side by side revealed that the RWS scope was the least liked by everyone who was shooting. They all said the same thing, that the other scopes were focused better, this one made their eyes strain. They were right, and I have replaced the scope with one that I have had excellent results with and one that everyone agreed was very clear.  (UTG 3-9X40) The RWS scope is large and it is heavy. Above 9 power, the focus is not good. The lower you turn it, the better it becomes. I hate to do a complete turn about in my opinion of this scope, but my first impressions were just wrong. I would have been better off buying the UTG, which has already proved to work for me. I now have one on the gun, but the price of it went up $60 because I bought this one first............. O-Well.  CW... you tried to tell me, and you were right...

Just tring to help brother!! A Adj Obj/Side Focus is a REQUIREMENT for me for all AG and RF rifles I have scopes on.

I just tried a UTG myself. I have a Crosman 2100 coming and need a scope, so I tried a UTG 4X32 AO from Pyramid air. (If they had the Hawke 4x32 AO I would have just bought another.) If its as good as my Hawke 4x32 that's on the 2200 Magnum I will be happy! I WAS going to get one for my WTM  (Hatsan 125) but I am trying a peep on it.

I will let you know what I think of it when it arrives.

TNX Bro... Some times it takes a mistake or two before good advice is accepted! I have a Hawke that I do like, but I also have been using a UTG Varmit and it has worked well for me.. that's why I decided to get another one. I've made a few mistakes since I've been bitten by the AR Bug..... but I'm learning fast. I have a good deal of Gun Smithing behind me, but am learning that ARs are a different Breed, Indeed!

I returned my RWS 4-12 X 50 scope to the company. That scope has been discontinued... so they sent me a 3-9 X 44 as a replacement. I have not mounted it, but looking through it seems to be better than the first scope. It is clear and in focus up to 9 power. Now... I need to buy another gun to put it on!

I've been using Nikko Stirling scopes for the last 2 years and have no complaints and actually prefer them over the crowd favorite (Hawke) in most instances in my experience the NS had out performed the Hawke equivalent. The MountMaster or Diamond series I normally use on my 50 yd and under guns and my .30-.357 AGs and then the Nighteater platinums with either the extended MilDot or FT reticle for my long range AGs (75-150yd) so far I have had ZERO issues and have been very pleased. My local Turners Outdoorsman carries most models and if not in stock will order, in most cases their only a 10-15 dollars more than the online price but I get to look, handle and test all the features and it doent hurt that every few months they go on sale up to 25% off.

Check out cheaperthandirt.com, they may have more stock of airgun rated scopes right now because it is more of a powderburner friendly site.  They have really good prices on the hawke scopes by the way, as well as a few of their airguns.

My experience with Nikko Sterling (NS) scopes..

In Brazil, due legal restrictions, the most common scopes' model for airguns is the 4x32.

There is a firm Rossi that used to import these NS 4x32 in 2 models with mil dot reticles AO, Mountmaster and Gold Crown, and spread them trough dealers.   

In Oct/2012, I acquired a NS Mountmaster from a store, quoted "up to 27 joules proof" ("20" fpe) .

It has lasted only some hundreds rounds in my weakest Whisper ("13" fpe); windage adjustment stuck.

The store sent me a brand new; one month later in my strongest Whisper ("15" fpe), and the reticle has fallen apart.

In Feb/2013, I've asked for the Gold Crown model, more expensive, but quoted "up to 42 joules" ("31" fpe).

Some e-mails, once in a while an answer, but still waiting ..

Important: I couldn't find what was the original source for the 'resistance' information (''up to __ joules"); would it be from NS? The store didn't answer this question, neither Rossi; in the NS site I didn't find this information either.

Hi guys I know its been quiet on this post for a while but I've had a dilemma with my Benjamin Trail synthetic which wrecked a Hawke 4×32 AO in about 100 shots. I now have a previously unused Gamo 4×32 on it just to see if it holds up. I have a Centre point 3-9×40 on my XL 725 so wondering if that will turnto custard too. Think I'll try a Nikko 2-7×32 on my Trail all weather they are still around new in New Zealand. Can't believe the reticle twisted on a Hawk scope. Didn't think a 21 ftlb gun would kill a Hawke..

I've had REALLY bad experiences with Hawkes in Spring guns. But then I was shooting mostly High Power D54's.

Still, at 12 ft-lbs that I mostly shoot now I have needed real strong scopes to hold absolute zero. Needed for FT.

There are Two things that break a scope:
First the inverse recoil (when the scope breaks within the first 100 shots0
Vibrations (when the scope start loosening on the inside, and THEN either rotate the reticle or break parts)

You CAN do quite a lot for your scopes if you work towards reducing the vibrations inside your gun.
