RWS vs. Nikko Stirling Scopes

  Which brand is better? I cant afford a Hawke yet and may need to spend my money on something other than my airgun..but I dont want to. I like the price of the nikko stirling scopes and the rws scopes.
   I was looking at the mountmaster of the nikko stirling scopes and the 4-12x50 rws scope. Which has better glass?

 If not I may have to find a leapers...most of them are sold out or not in stock....

Man I hear ya on that "Out of Stock" statement... I've beat the bushes trying to buy things from the majors. It's been difficult, if not impossible to put a order together because they are out of so much stock.

I've been wanting to buy one of those RWS 4-12 X 50 scopes that Airgun Depot has on sale... but they didn't have any 30mm one piece droop mounts, so I just could not bring myself to buy the scope. Well I found a RWS Compensating mount last night and ordered it, so I also ordered the scope from AD. I don't likes splitting up the order but it just couldn't be avoided. I'm paying twice as much for shipping.

I've read reviews and comment about this RWS scope to the point that my eyes are crossed. The majority of folks agree that it is a strong scope, and again the majority seem to be happy with the scope. However, I also read some reports that say the optics are not good... well, I guess it depends upon what you are comparing it with.  I've spent way too much money on Air Guns and Scopes the last few months, but I still want to put a decent scope on my "Bargain" rifle (Thumb Hold Ruger Air Hawk), which I am really enjoying. This RWS scope deal is just too tempting not to try. I'm hoping that it will work out.  Should know in a few days.

The RWS scopes of old were made by Hako, a quality japanese company.  Pretty sure the new scopes are made in china just like most of the rest. Saadly the new ones I looked threw were nothing to write home about.

   I bought one of the RWS 4-12x50CI scopes at the Roanoke Airgun EXpo. Thinking I was getting a bargain German made scope. I ask the Pyramydair sales person where it was made and he stated "All scopes are made in china, Now " Not knowing better I bought one anyway.

  I bought the RWS and later a Wally World Centerpoint. I have never owned a Nikko, so can't compare. The RWS glass was not quite as dark as the centerpoint, but it was dark when compared to my SWFA SS10x42

 The exit pupil was very forgiving compared to the Centerpoint. This scope held zero and functions flawlessly. I had no problems.  It did develop a "Ping" while mounted on my RWS 34P. Turned out to be a loose ring in the objective causing that ping sound. I guess it was a thread protector, because another ring held the objective lens in place.  I put two tiny dabs of locktite on the threads and run it up finger tight. No more pinging!

 IMHO, I'd buy a higher quality 'USED' brand name or go on the Ramen noodle diet ( 2 ramen noodle meals +1 healthy meal) for a month or 3!. Money saved eating noodles could buy bout any scope you desire?

Hey man, I like them noodles. The Scope is already on it's way, so I'll give it a try.. I might get lucky and get one that actually looks OK... it seems that quality control is one of the biggest factors, and is a "Iffy" thing with some of the Chinese stuff... I'm hoping that my main man,  Du Yu No Wong, was inspecting on the day they made mine!

I don't own a RWS scope but I do have a Nikko-Sterling 4-16 Target master on my HW97k. Glass is clear and I have had zero problems.

Scope (RWS 4-12 X 50) is in and mounted on my Ruger Air Hawk. This is just a preliminary report, but if holds true, this is my cheapest and new favorite scope, mounted on my cheapest Rifle, that is turning out to be a real KEEPER. I mounted the scope using a RWS one piece compensating mount. I had to trim the clamps back on the mount in order for it to attach to the Air Hawk. the 11 mm mounting channels on the Air Hawk were 1/2" too short to accommodate the  4 1/2" mounting clamps. The scope mounted up just fine. Before I mounted it I checked it for Optically centering, and it was so close that I didn't change it. The first shot at 25 yd was about 1 1/2" high and 1" to the left. The scope zeroed out very quickly, and the "Clicks are very positive". The AO on this scope is more accurate than ANY of my other AO scopes.  At 25 yds it read 25 yds, at 75 yds it read 75 yds... I was amazed. Time will tell if it holds zero, but after 100 shots it has not moved. The POI did not change throughout the range of power adjustments. When shooting my 75 yd soup can, I held over by one mil dot, using .177 CPHP. I have to hold over 3 mil dots with my .22 using CPHP. I was going to change this gun to a .22 barrel, but now I am reconsidering.  I know, that is not the best check, but the can represents a squirrel. The POI did not change on the can as I adjusted the power. At 25 yds I could see no real change in POI when I adjusted the power. The Focus, which was my biggest concern, is just fine, right up to the 12 power range. No.. it is not as good as my Leopold, but it is certainly as good as my Hawkes or UTGs. The mil dots are very nice, they are smaller than my other scopes. At THIS POINT IN TIME, I believe that this is the biggest bargain out there on a scope. At $59 it is certainly performing as well as my other scopes costing 3-4 times as much. The gun is shooting a good group, and the scope is working very well.  So far the TOTAL investment is $180, and it is shooting as well as the guns I have $1,000 invested in! I hope all of this LAST.

Just Monday a friend took a 3x9 and mounted it on a 22 for some plinking.. all was OK until he tried higher powers and the scope all but came apart... when he turned it back to lower powers it was oK but lost its zero...

Save just a little longer and buy a good cheap scope.    Center Points at Wally world and refurbs from Natchez...

Just Monday a friend took a 3x9 and mounted it on a 22 for some plinking.. all was OK until he tried higher powers and the scope all but came apart... when he turned it back to lower powers it was oK but lost its zero...

 i can afford 35 real easy and like this version of the CP scopes i dont like the new ones they have. But quick question i didnt see Ga in the state so i cant ship it to my house. Offers arent afailible for Tn, Ga, and Al.

CWLS; Yeah... it may not last, but right now it is doing a great job for me. I've heard other places that the focus was not good when turned up to the 12 power range. Mine seems OK ... at least for now! Haven't heard that they were falling apart, guess I'll have to wait and see on that too. Oh well, if it disintegrates completely,  I've still enjoyed putting this package together for the "Cheap" and seeing it perform right along side my high dollar stuff.

I know it's not the brand your questioning and may not be what you need..... BUT.

I just received a Hawke 4x32 AO scope mil dot from optics planet for 45$. It's perfect. Very clear and crisp excellent adjustments that allowed seamless site in with about seven pellets. Focus to under 15' Brite optics!!! I guess that's from the fixed power but it's a very nice scope for under 50$!

IMHO Hawke is a better "name" than either Nikko or RWS (scopes)

It's been a while now, and I have had more experience using the RWS Scope. My first impressions were a bit too "Glowing" for this scope. cwlongshot's recommendation to avoid it was good advice. I had the family up for a early Thanksgiving, and we all ended up shooting all of my Air Rifles at the Long Targets out back. Using the guns side by side revealed that the RWS scope was the least liked by everyone who was shooting. They all said the same thing, that the other scopes were focused better, this one made their eyes strain. They were right, and I have replaced the scope with one that I have had excellent results with and one that everyone agreed was very clear.  (UTG 3-9X40) The RWS scope is large and it is heavy. Above 9 power, the focus is not good. The lower you turn it, the better it becomes. I hate to do a complete turn about in my opinion of this scope, but my first impressions were just wrong. I would have been better off buying the UTG, which has already proved to work for me. I now have one on the gun, but the price of it went up $60 because I bought this one first............. O-Well.  CW... you tried to tell me, and you were right...

I have a center point 3-9x32 on my 22 mag that took a serious hit when I slipped on ice whilst out hunting.  Landed on a chunk of granite.  Scratched and dinged but still holds zero at 100 yards.  I too am looking fir a cheap scope for my new Hatsan and am thinking center point, leapers, or barska.
