Another HW30S convert

Well, after dialing in my TX200 and my Discovery I decided to get something that would fit the bill of plinking in the backyard (replacing another old worn down Gamo Hunter Sport) and gopher hunting; at about 20 yards. I had no idea I would be purchasing my first German rifle. I happened to be working at a conference in Arizona and was 20 minutes away from Airguns of Arizona, so I decided to stop by. I spoke with Kip and he is quite a hunter; he had just returned from a South Africa hunting trip. I asked, "what would fit the bill for what I was looking for" and he pointed me to the HW30S. I also looked at the rest of the HW line, but the HW30S was exactly what I was looking for.

I received my rifle, sighted it in, with the iron sights, and it is the most quiet  and accurate rifle. Packaging was excellent and it came with some test numbers to show it functioned before shipping; impressed with the service and they don't charge extra. I also ordered the Vortek Kit, but I do not see why I need one at this point, when out of the box it is perfect. Maybe someone can help explain what it has done for them.

My overall thoughts so far is why didn't I get one of these when I first started with airguns. The quality is superb and accuracy is amazing. I think this rifle will see a lot of target time from now on.

Congratulations on joining the HW30 club. . As you now know firsthand, these are fine little rifles. They are quiet, easy cocking and very accurate. They also have plenty of power for outdoor shooting distances and pest removal. I shoot my Beeman R7 the most of all my rifles off my back porch from 20-50 yards while scoped. Out to 40 yards I can consistently hit small targets like my FT squirrel, dandelions, etc.  I know you'll have a blast doing much of the same.

I left mine alone other than a set back trigger for my diminutive hands.  I use a peep on mine but sometimes think about a second one with a scope.

I went out and did some shooting today and at 10 yards they are in the same hole, but now I will need to get a scope. I tried at 15 yards and at 20 yards and they are good groups; except for the fact that I cannot see afterward, I am walking around with my left eye blurry . Leaves me no choice, but to get a scope. Any suggestions on a light scope out to 20 yards?

Everyone who enjoys springers should have one. They are the perfect plinker/short range pester. I don't care for the shot cycles of the Vortek kits. I went with a JM kit and seal. Zero twang and torque. Last chrony was 603 fps spread of 5 and SD of 1. That is why people put a new kit in. To make the good, great.
The Vortek kit tries to bump up the fpe. The downside seems to be a bit more of a lively shot cycle.
I would install the cocking lever insert soon to prevent galling.

I have a Hawke 2-7X32 HD IR with Burris Signature rings on mine. Nice small scope that doesn't over power the size of the gun. The objective is about 1/8 inch of the tube. Nice and low.

Thanks Jim. Ordering today. Since, I will be taking it apart to install the lever insert, maybe I will go one step further and install the Vortek. This is an amazing rifle. It does not look fancy at all, but man it is accurate; much more than I am.

JM has a flat shipping fee I would order some of his lubes as well and a spare seal if you don't have one with your kit.

They are a great gun with a peep, but to get the most out of them they really do need a scope.

I found a dab of moly between the cocking arm and the tube will prevent the galling and smooth it right out.

Don't put the Vortek kit in unless you (1) specifically want more power and/or (2) your gun gets twangy. Otherwise it might be super sweet and best left alone.

My HW30S has a Hawke 3-9x40AOIR Sport HD scope and it feels nice. The 2-7x mentioned above would be my next choice.

I recently scored a second hand Clearidge 3-9X32 scope for my Beeman R7. It is awesome with bright image, clear glass, fine reticle and robust turrets.

I never had a 30 but my first spring gun [which I still shoot] is a hw-55 great quality in spring guns. im not sure but a 30 was based from a 55 . congrats for buying a frauline

Just redoing my 30s .....buttoned the piston and had the tube Sonnen honed....JM kit goes in tomorrow.

Mark , I want too hear more about that Clearidge.  I plan on getting one for  my 30 next month.

I shoot my R7 several times a week at backyard targets. 

Have tried a bunch of scope setups and have settled on a vortex diamondback 4-12xAO. 

For internals, I prefer the smoother and more mellow JM spring over the vortek kit.

I had a blast today. I put a Center Point scope, from an old Gamo Hunter Sport, on my HW30 and it is a lot of fun. I played around with it at 15 yards, 20 yards and finally 25 yards. I have only tried the JSB Exact RS 7.33 grain. I am hesitant in case I need to hunt gophers. Not sure if 7.9 or 8.44 will penetrate; maybe someone can chime in.

Here are 5 shot groups on each target at 25 yards. The flyers are definitely me. I may need to dial in the trigger a bit. My hand is sore after today.

I would use more gun on gophers. Nice shooting though.
