Scope Problems

It is An EZ tap 4X16X40 Bushnell AO
Came with a Leapers manual
Doesn't work worth 2 dead fly's. Can't keep it on target. Took it off my R9 went to open sights the gun shoots good.
Put it on. On top of my bench vise to make sure it was level but I noticed when I moved my head the cross hair moved around. I thought it wasn't supposed to do that?
 Is the scope bad?

I've had 6 or 7 leapers that had crosshair failures like you describe.   I now have Hawke 4X on all my springers (except the B25 which lives in the back of my closet behind my hunting clothes) and no problems.

If you move your head and the cross hair move, it's parallax error.

if the reticle moves when you move your head, the AO isn't adjusted to the distance you are looking

set the scope on it's highest power and set up a target at a reasonable distance that the scope will focus down like 10 or 15 yards then adjust the AO for the clearest focus of the target.. then the reticle should stay put when you move your head...the AO adjustment should then be very close when you lower the power.

I just went 9 rounds with my first personally owned variable power scope... so the scars on my soul from that lesson are still fresh..

Tried that @ 35 Passes seems to work haven't had a chance to move to 50 yet. should I leave it basically just set there or adjust the whole thing to a 50 passe line.
By the way this is my first scope.

I was thinkin you move your eye and the crosshair moves while clamped in a vice? needs adjusting at its highest setting then back down a little at a time. your eyes wont move something mounted down solid... unless you have super powers

You adjust the AO every time you change distance.  When you set it to focus sharply on target at a given distance there should be a read out on the scope that will tell you approximately what distance you are shooting.  Conversely, if you set the distance reading on the scope it should be pretty close to in focus for targets at the marked distance.  When properly set, if everything's working properly, the crosshairs should not appear to move.

OK on that. But what about when I am hunting do I have to adjust the scope with each shot?
A squiral 20 ft. in a tree and I'm 20 ft from the tree?
A rabbit at 25 yrd.?
Ect?
Or is this just a target scope?

for a distance change of 9 yards to 25 you are going to want to refocus (ei set the parallax) between shots
as well as figure out your hold over/under for your trajectory and distance that the scope is sighted in for.


once you play with the parallax adjustment and get familiar with it's real settings (not always what's on the dial) you
can use the parallax setting for a short distance range finder with the predictability of measurement falling off as the
yardage increases....


I am becoming interested in the side adjuster style of parallax adjustable scopes..they have a typical adjuster knob like a windage
adjuster but it is used forparallax and can be fitted with a 3 or 4" diameter than you can wrap with tape  and mark as you see fit to get really personalized with yardage estimation...what I find most interesting about the this type of adjustment is the possibility of using a lever instead of wheel that you can reach up and adjust with your thumb...i'm not a good enough shot to worry too much about the accuracy of the distance estimation..the trajectory difference of 5 yards either way won't matter to me until I get much better at shooting an airgun...I just want to be able to see clearly close up, at medium distance and far ranges with out much playing around..

If you focus on the squirrel first, and then wanna swing around at the rabbit, then yes, it'll probably be out of focus, and will need readjustment of the AO.   Yes it is a hassle in the field.
FWIW.  I use a non-AO 3-9x42mm for hunting.  The parallax is fixed to 50yards.  It focuses down to 8-9yds well.  I just leave it at 8x or 9x and go hunting.
