In these little guns, which caliber would you choose for squirrels, .177 or .22. And what kind of range are they good to?

(not interested in a .20 cal)

.177 for better penetration. Head shot 20-25 yards would be my limit.

The .177 for those low of power rifles. Range is also limited.

With the way spring guns jump & discipline required to shoot accurately .... More power may buy you anouther 10-20 yards in kill distance, but in application more power most likely to degrade accuracy

It comes down to your ability to shoot accurately. With my 10-16 fpe guns I still limit my kill shots to 40 yards just to be safe. I want to kill not wound.

Totally not helpful here on advice,except that having been on forums for a year or 2, the R7/hw30 can do it.

Probably be safe to limit to 30 yds, but this is just a guesstimate........chairgun will give you a very good answer as to when your power is gonna likely drop off ...........this will also most likely be when your trajectory really starts to plunge.

I have hit 2 of them this year from <25 yds with 8.4 grains and a Webley Alecto Ultra PISTOL.

the R7's game is accuracy so I concur with .177 for trajectory and penetration.
Pair it with a pellet that has a good BC and your good to 30 most likely.

PS, if some of the owners say 20-25, then that is what id agree with........ I stretch 12 ftlb guns to 45 and 50 occasionally, but they are perfect storm circumstances.

I limit myself to the 35yd area, because I'm very confident with my accuracy at that distance, in field hunts, and still know there's plenty of FPE. The CFX will go further, and yeah, I may go further, but I haven't seen much need in rabbit and squirrel hunting.

Definitely .177

A hot .177 R7 was hitting 580 fps, so I figure you'd be lobbing the .22s...

R7 is pretty weak to throw a .22. I know the fine German enginners created it, but just sayin'.

Take the HW30S in 177 for any purpose. Also take a light pellet, like the CPL, JSB Express or JSB Exact RS. Mine shoots these last pellets at 196 m/s, say 640 fps. Been systematically shooting HFT targets out to 40 yards. Past 30 yards winddrift however can be bad with these light pellets.

I keep my shots to less than 25yds - all that is available out back anywho.
I have put hundreds down and the neighbors don't here a thing even when sitting
out having drinks.
Tuned they are about as close to perfect as one can get.
Hawkins tuned in a SC stock .177 w/8.2 RWS
One hole literally.

For hunting squirrel a 34 or Gamo CFR are much better choices compared to an R7. Five or six fpe at the muzzle can kill a squirrel but it has to be an almost perfect shot from 10 to 25 yards. The R7 is not the right tool for the job, the 34 or CFR are both more than capable in either caliber from 35 - 40 yards.

IMO the R7 is good for smaller birds, mice and chipmunks out to 25- 30 yards. Not squirrels.

agree with the .177. My older R7 is spitting 7.33 JSB's at 650fps for 6.8FPE. I did a debur and lube tune with Krytox.

For squirrel head shots, back of the ear more like it, you have appt. a one inch kill zone. For most shooters, in the field, off hand, with wind, 25 meters is about it. One inch c-t-c. Now do you use HP's, domes, or pointed?

This subject comes up at least a few times a year...... Skill and shot placement are king...... Given enough time and experience most people will learn how much power they "Don't Need" .

I'm another vote for the .177. I haven't used a .22, but I've done fine pesting with my .177 and had good results with it out to about 35 yards or so.
