Peep sights (homemade)

Hi guys, I just converted a regular iron sights into peep sights. The sights are for my B21 Chinese replica of the 48. The process is pretty much straight forward, removed the rear slot and made a peep plate from copper which was soldered and tapped. I still need to widen the peep hole (which is now 1.5 mm wide) and do some tuning.




























Just need to figure out how to fix the sights to the 9 mm dovetail, I think I'll use an old scope mount and cut, drill and tape it. And maybe a black patina?

Just curious.... has anyone ever made an insert for a low scope ring to use as a peep sight?.... would seem to be a simple solution....

D@#n it Bob, I should have thought of that before I started. But my only consolation is that the way you are describing it won't be adjustable for windage and elevation.

Hmmmm ...... unless you have one of them fancy sunoptics scope mounts that are adjustable and you mount the peep hole instead of the scope, d@#n it Bob why do you have to be smarter than me??

Just figured a way to mount the rear sight, it hit me when I took my scope off, I found this tapped 4 mm hole in the 11 mm dovetail. I think it is probably for some sort of scope stop.

I'll epoxy the front part of the rear sight.









I am fairly new to peep sight, just shot them a couple of times on a FWB 300S, and I fell in love with them , I wanted to ask a question, with my home made sights, when I focus on the globe or the target I keep seeing the globe getting larger and smaller as if my eyes are trying to adjust for something that is not there, and I have a very strong gut feeling that this is not really good, especially cause this didn't happed when I used the FWB sights.

Now my question is does the peep hole need to be larger? Right now it is 1.5 mm should I make it 2 mm?

The diameter of the rear peep governs the brightness of the sight picture.... If you have a high contrast and good lighting, you can use a smaller peep.... If you're hunting, you may need nearly 1/8"....

Some globes are adjustable for windage and elevation, that would be necessary for the "simple" version of my scope ring peep.... As you say, an adjustable ring would do the trick, all you have to do is find the correct height globe to go with it....

Some systems use an aperture that is off center in the "hood" or whatever you want to call the device, turning it 1/2 turn gives some elevation adj, which might be a nice feature :-). The notch at 6 o'clock shows you which way you have the eccentric positioned.



One that comes to mind is a 1 moa adjustment, and 1/2 moa is avail too, but you could mfg one with more adj.

I have trained a LOT of shooters, and one issue many have in the beginning (and it may crop up with a new type of sight) is learning to focus on the front sight.

Most of us that have been shooting a long time do some "tricks" we do not even think about with every shot with iron sights. Often you focus on the target to FIND it if it is a small target, then put the blurred front sight on the target, then shift focus back where it belongs on the front sight, then squeeze the shot off, all in a heartbeat or two without even thinking about it.

The TYPE of target we start a new person out on can have a BIG impact in how easily they learn the proper front sight focus, I was working with my wife and we had one of the targets with about eight little widgets on one 8-1/2x11 sheet, she was having a tough time, I finally figured out what was going on and simply reversed the target so she was shooting at the blank back side, and her groups shrank...she was better able to concentrate on focus on the front sight when the target had no distractions to encourage her to focus on the target.
