Scope and Mount Selection for HW30S

OK - some of my posts have bee all over the board on new guns as of late.  Decided to try and really become good with what I have before any new gun ventures.

Part of this is admitting I need to add a scope (much as I used to love to shoot irons).  Did get the Williams peep, but I still don't focus as well as I'd like.

So dropping the new gun thing - my next venture is a scope and mounts for the HW30S, and I'd like some recommendations.  Would like to stay under $100 for the scope if possible, fixed or variable power no matter - just decent quality.  I'd be happy with a good fixed 4X, but open to most anything.

Medium Burris Signature rings keep the objective just off the tube. Can't get any lower, about 1/8 inch, and still adjust the AO.

What do you guys think of the Bug Busters on a little springer like this?  They seem to be popular scopes.

I tried 2 of the UTG 3-9x32 Compact CQB Bug Buster AO RGB Scopes, 1st one crashed and then the replacement scope crashed. (at least they're consistent) I am done with UTG and am replacing it with a Hawke Optics 3-9x40 AO Sport HD scope.

I already had a Hawke Optics 3-9x40 AO Sport HD scope on my Whisper and thought I would try the UTG, on my Stalker, boy was I wrong.

I have a new 3-9 Bugbuster I have yet to mount on anything (I hope I have better luck as its long past 30days now).  I had several of the fixed 6x's and asside from one failure they have worked well.  Despite their small size they are fairly heavy (BugBuster),  I would consider the Hawke 2-7 x 32 as a good choice too as its light and easy to mount.

Well I'm sure there are great UTG scopes out there, but,

What's that old saying "Get Me Once You're Stupid, Get Me Twice I'm Stupid" Well I've been on both sides of the saying. Good news is Amazon had my back.

With the HW30, you can look at a fixed power rifle scope.  They'll hold up to that HW30 rifle.   Simmons, Bushnell, etc. will keep it all light.  Same with mounts.  You can probably look thru a few, and buy one locally, which helps if you have a problem, for quick replacement.  Most all decent scopes are lifetime warranty,  but if you have a problem, (and many Pop-up quickly), you can take it back for exchange quickly and inexpensively.

Medium should be safe, I think I used a low mount on mine but cant be sure.


Another scope I use frequently, good and clear and a bargain for the money with mount.



Its a bit heavier than the Hawke, if you find it overwhelms the little 30s its great to use elsewhere. 

The picture, the front one is my 46 with the 2-7 Hawke, I wanted the least intrusive scope on the Stutzen.

A 4x32 fixed or the 2x7x32 on Medium rings will be perfect..

I use a Hammers 3-9x42mm, and it is a good lite compact (9") scope.   Had it on a 12fpe rifle since 2006, so I'm happy w/it.   Good China scope for the money, that Ran under the radar for a while.
They now also offer the same, in a 5x power, which is cool for mildot users for their calcs.  I'll post both model links.

Are the Hawke scopes made in China?  Better than Leapers?

They're pretty much all made in China/Indo/Asia anymore.  Unless you're buying into $$$ units.   They run pretty close in glass, within pricepoints, for similar models, and QC the same deal, they all do their best. These companies follow the Japanese refined AMERICAN idea of contracting shops to specialize in making one specific component.  These shops make their specialy piece (or pieces) in mass, and sell them to more than one factory.  That's Truth.  So the same glass or turret or barrel, or whatever, can go to whoever.
  I sure won't cheerlead one brand against the other in lower ($200.00) priced scopes.
For U.S.A.   Redfield still makes their scopes in Oregon.

I would say my Hawke scopes are a bit better than UTG/Leapers & Centerpoint in build quality.  Like computers it costs more to make it smaller and lighter.  That said a couple of the BSA scopes I have bought are remarkably close to Hawke's low end scopes in the furniture department (same style nurl for hand adjustments that kinda thing).  When Centerpoint brand was introduced by Crosman there where identical scopes to some UTG/Leapers.  The scope factories in China accommodate buyers with cash in hand so its important to pay attention to reviews on individual models as one could be a bargain and the next from an entire different factory using different optics.

That has happened to me once with Hawke, I bought an HD IR 3-9 x 50 and loved it.  I ran across one in the same line, HD 3-9 x 50 for about half price.  I didn't care about not having a lit reticle ( IR ) as a matter of fact I was happy it saved the weight.  The optics where absolutely crappy in comparison to the IR model.

So better than Leapers is a model by model comparison.  In general they do occupy a niche just above for a price premium, sometimes it matters others not so much.
