I shot my new to me R-1 thru a crono one time at the range guy next to me had the crono, it registered 640 fps. What should it be?

What pellet did you use? I would say that is low. Stock you should see 750 or better with a 14.3 grain pellet. Now that being said, one shot may not be enough to diagnose. There could have been an error or condition that caused a lower than actual reading (lighting, angle at which pellet traveled between screens etc). Did the owner chrono any of his/her guns? If so, how where those figures? You say "new to you" so I take it its used. Did the previous owner(s) ever chrono the gun recently? It may very well be low and time for a new spring and seal.

I was looking for the our take section on straight shooters for the R1/HW80 but can't find it anymore seems they have changed their site around but as HNT5 said should be better, what caliber and pellet did you use and more than one shot is needed for reasons HNT5 mentioned.

Typically in the low to mid 700s using JSB 15.9 .

SS site; bring up the R1, then "our take". All the info is still there. My .177 with a JM spring and seal is doing 850 with JSB exacts right out of the gate. SS site said 890 with that pellet, so I am guessing the velocity will increase as the seal breaks in; I did not size it. It shoots great with the JM parts and I am very happy with it at this velocity. 640 in .22 sounds low for sure. Make sure to compare pellet to pellet as mentioned above.  Super easy to take apart. I did mine without a compressor, no problemo, tk

I got my 29 year old R1 (.177) out today and put a new scope on it for HFT. I ran some speeds with Crosman 7.9 Premiers:

ES: 20.5

1/2" Group at 20 yards all day long. Dr. Beeman advertised this rifle at 930fps in 1984. He used 6.5gr Lasers to achieve that speed. This rifle still has the original spring and seals. Until last year when I bought my first Marauder this rifle was shooting 500-1000 pellets every month. That is about 252,000 pellets. (Mostly Beeman (H&N) pellets) Today, I retired the Beeman 66R 2-7X scope in favor of a Hawke 3-12 Nite-Eye Digital. I have to say the Beeman scope is brighter but now I have a scope to compete in HFT Springer class. 13.55 ft lbs with the 7.9 gr Premiers.

I think the Beeman sales doctor said 930 with lasers, the lightest pellet of the day. I believe real world fps to be high 800's with a healthy R1 and normal pellets.

my old 1985 San Rafel   Beeman R1 still shoots 850fps with Beeman crow mag pellets and all I ever did was a drop or two of chamber oil when I got it as it was setting for yrs. ~~BS50 ~~ note mines a .177  ~~ a 22 might be closer to your number ?
