Test for Power XL1100

I have a known seal problem but I've been suspecting the piston also because I'm always down.  Sight in and 2 hours later I'm down again, I readjust the scope shoot for a while and I'm down again.  My pellets are not penetrating the plywood I shoot the same either. I know I can quiclkly answer this with a chronograph but like I said, can't get/don't have access to one

I'm nervous about asking Crossman for a new ram, CROWPOPPER here has has some bad results.

Just to clearify, when you say your, "suspecting the piston also", do you mean the piston that the seal is mounted on, or do you mean the ram (gas spring) that fits inside the piston ?

The gas ram paul.  I know their have been very few failures so far on the ram but Crowpopper has me thinking

i sent the ram back today(the used one they sent me) i still have my ram thats shooting 24 fpe
when i get my other ram ill chrony it and do some power testing for you!
im thinking ill have the other ram next week

Thanks-crowpopper, I'm waiting on my seal to change which I think will fix my accuracy issues and maybe my power.  If not I'll either ask for a new gun or get a new ram from crossman.  After having a couple of these XL's I'm thinking ALL of them need a little home tinkering.  I still want to try a paper test with someone.  I didn't have enough 2 liters to test all night like I want.  I only had 3.

Lets try a standard phone book.  Whatever yellow pages you have shoot it through the cover and let me know how many pages you get (what page you end up on might do).  I'll do the same.

Here's what I got with the book supported.  I have a phone book with one carded cover and the rest phone book paper. I'm counting broken pages.

Near the spine:  page 541
Dead Center:     page 536
low 2" from the edge page 3" from the bottom page:  674
Not very scientific but entertaining.

I've been thinkng about 674 and wg=hat I get is with the book loose on the edges, more pages are likely to break.  I shot 10 more times into the book and  538 is the average.

Blasting through the 312 won't tell us anything....what other common Items do you have?  We might be out of luck.

Try Ivory soap. It's a good ballastic medium. Stack them up and see how many it shoots through. They are pretty inexpensive.

Yeah, our local phone book is only a couple hundred pages with both yellow and white pages combined !  I've got an old Syracuse phone book that's over 700 pages just for the yellow pages alone.


I'll give it a try tomorrow.

BTW, at what distance are you guys shooting from to the book, ... and what pellet  After all, distance and pellets have an affect on out come (or 'in go' in this instance   ).

If we're going to come up with a standard, how about ten feet muzzle to book and pick a relativly common pellet such as Superdomes, or CPHP.

The distance is 10 yards muzzle to book (30 measured feet), the pellet is CPHP, the gun XL1100, and the medium is a telephone book supported.  It needs to be at least 700 pages and for penetration and we are counting BROKEN pages.
