I'm trying to come up with a test for power of the Benjamin Trail NP XL 1100. I know this can easily be done with a chronograph but for sake of this thread lets assume you don't have one or yours is loaned out or broken. Also assume that your gun is healthy and shooting between 24-26fpe. What can I shoot to compare with healthy gun (your gun)to my gun to verify that mine is OK on power? I'm using CPHP.

A chronograph is the only precise way to measure the power, AFAIK. There is the phone book test or the 2x4 test but there are just too many variables in ANY other test to be accurate. You CAN make or buy ballistic gelatin and go that route. It will show you penetration but no numbers to compare. So, in my opinion, you need a chrony to get the real story.

Dave beat me to the punch, but here's my .02............That's a tall order on any front. Seems like too many variables. The only way would be to have the exact same density material to check penetration. Lots of variation in pieces of wood, etc. The only accurate way would be to use a chrony. The f1 is fairly cheap, and works great. But all said and done, accuracy and consistency is more important to me than 50fps either way. Mine is shooting around 860fps, others are shooting up to 900 or so. It could be a bit more accurate for paper work, but usually hit other targets if I do my part.

Stacked paper is a fairly reliable indicator of power (penetration) if you use the same pellet in each gun being compared to rule out differences in pellet design. It will serve until you get a Chrony, and it's cheaper than ballistic jelly. And if your going hunting, it can tell you things about which pellet penetrates better, or mushrooms better, that a Chrony can't. Especially if you soak the news paper in water over night - the poor man's ballistic gelatin.

I fill a cardboard carton with news paper. Tape a target with several bullseyes to the front of the carton and shoot several pellets into one bullseye. Then count how many pages deep the tip of each pellet has traveled. Average the pages penetrated and write it down.

Do the same with other AG's you want to compare with, from the exact same distance, with the same pellets, but into a differant bullseye.

Then compare the differences. While not the most precise measure of energy, it will be surprisingly close to the actual power differences in the various AG's.

You can also use the paper stack to compare penetration ability of differant pellets fired from the same gun.

Before my Chrony showed up , i needed to do a similar test to see if my gun was weak .It did not appear to be hitting as hard as my other " Lower powered " guns . I used a 15mm piece of deckboard set approx 50' away . My Phantom and Benji Clasic which i now know are putting out appprox 660 fps , went clean through the wood . The pellets fired through the XL1100 just went in up to the skirt on the pellets . A couple of times it just hit and bounced off . I now know ( thanks to the Chrony ) that i had one , very sick XL1100 . Chrony is the only way to go .

You can use Duct Seal to compare to different rifles. But you have to shoot the pellets in equally perpendicular so one doesn't enter more at an angle. Years ago, Beeman sold Duct Seal, with a small table that gave approximate depths that different calibers and weights would penetrate. You have to compare wadcutter to wadcutter, not WC to domed. But Duct Seal is affected by temperature and exposure. Cold makes it harder (less penetration) and over time it can dry somewhat, becoming harder as well. So make sure the conditions are the same when testing. But just because one pellet goes in 1/2 in and another goes 1/4 in, doesn't mean that the first gun was twice the velocity.

Chrony's are tools. Just like car mechanics tools and doctors tools. They can tell you the health of your shooter. A pro tuner would be almost lost without one these days.

I don't need exact numbers I just need to know my piston is ok by comparing it to someone elses. I have other things I need to buy other than a chronograph right now but I don't want to wait on finding out about my piston. And by comparing I need to compare to someone else's XL1100 Like say one of you guys doing the same test? You guys understand what I need? I need one of you to do a power test with your healthy gun that I can duplicate and compare to.
Shoot 10yards with a CPHP.

Hey shootstraight, I don't have a chrony yet ether and I think my XL1100 is very strong but I don't know, this is my first AG but it seems very powerful to me. Lets agree on something to shoot at 10yds and then compare. Hey how about 4 2liter Pepsi bottle, I know it wont go through 4 but maybe 3, I'll let you know. Well we will have to try something else. At 10yds the CPHP went through 1 2liter bottle and bounced off the 2nd one did the same thing at 20yds. I guess water is not the thing to test with.....

PS. I also shoot CPHP

If it won't fully penetrate even one 2L bottle, you have a problem. Even my Trail NP will penetrate both sides of a Pepsi 2L bottle with Crosman Premier HP's. The only pellet I've found so far that won't is Daisy's .22 wadcutter, but that's because it's made of REALLY soft lead.

BTW, I just chronoed my Trail NP yesterday at 700 fps, so yours must be substantially less than that :-(
