Does anyone shoot this particular caliber? What might your favorite loads be? Currently my rifle shoots Hornady Custom branded ammunition, 139 grain SST loaded to a factory specified 3000 fps... i'm trying to mimic that because its pushing 3 rounds touching at 100 yds. Thanks in advance.

the .280 rem is probably the most underrated caliber ever . why it isn't more popular is a mystery . it is good for just about everything .

It IS an awesome round but since anyone who's looking for speed is going to use a .270(130gr.)(both based on the 06' cartridge) and anyone looking for 180 gr. and up ammo would jump to the 30-06. The .280 was a tweener and since ammo remains scarcer for it than the other calibers, there were never as many rifles chambered for it and not many were sold. I had a browning BAR chambered for .280 and it always impressed me as a decent round, but there always seemed to be something better and i ended up trading it. Wouldn't hesitate to own another though. J

mine is the model 70 winchester featherweight. Topped with Leupold glass.. .its very lightweight, and extremely accurate for a lightweight rifle. I'm currently shooting a 139 SST rated at a factory 3000 fps (who knows actual FPS till i get to shoot it over the chrony). I can fire the first three shots out of a clean cold barrel, touching at 100 yds. group opens up a bit with 140 grain Rem Core-Lokts, but its still huntable under 200 yds with those factory loads.

I would highly recommend you get yourself a handloading bench setup, then you are completely untethered from factory load constraints, get a much wider bullet selection, plus you can tailor your cartridges for your particular rifle by employing such well known handloading techniques as neck sizing and seating the bullet for about 1/10" from the rifling leade.
It's also a great way to expand your shooting sports hobby, plus it's even better for passing those cold winters in the garage or basement making ammo for when the weather improves.

i already reload, i just havn't gotten the Equipment for the .280, i havn't owned it very long. the place i wanted to buy the dies from were out of stock... but for such a fine rifle, i might actually chock up and buy really nice set of dies.

Reloading would be the way to go for the .280 since it is just not that popular in the retail market. You could have the rifle re-barrelled to a more available caliber. But since you say you already reload I guess the biggest problem would be getting the brass cases. New or once fired.
I don't have a manual handy but is the bullet diameter .284 ? If so, you could always neck down 30.06 cases.
And what brand of dies do you use.

WELL, i absolutly can neck down .30-06 cases and fire form them. I'm actually on midway's site, trying to pick a good set of dies... i wanted to go RCBS, but there pricy... and i'm being greedy, i want full length, neck, seating die, and crimp... but they don't make a set of all 4..... I like to crimp my hunting ammo... just in case kind of thing.

454BBC, RCBS dies are a good choice. I own many different RCBS sets. But..... I really like the Redding die sets. Cost more but they are really nice. These days, I mostly use Dillon dies since I use a Dillon progressive press. Can load many many times more ammo on the progressive press. Compared to using a single stage press. And I've necked down 1000s of 30.06 to use for .270 . Just got to use them for your own use.

I actually use a lee hand press... and have for years... even for full length resizing a 7mm rem mag... has worked very well, and was 20 bucks... i typically use LEE pacesetter dies... and have never had a problem. I own one set of RCBS 7mm mag dies, and one set of 7mm mag Lee dies.. can't tell a difference in accuracy between teh two... I will buy what is available from midway... likely lee. also ordering a box or 2 of the 139 grain SST hornady bullets, as my rifle seems to love them.

It is quite easy. I reloaded 7mm rem mag full length cases, 40+ at a time... and never had an issue... the system doesn't take much strength. my wife was able to FL reload .243 cases.

Hand press?
That will sure take some elbow grease, plus it will definitely slow down your load rate quite a lot.

If you are using rounds in only one rifle, there is no need to do a full length
resize, just the neck. They will fireform to you chamber and actualy shoot
a little better.

Ed you can go to Hornady site an they have complete reload manual for the SST bullet's(I'm sure the Rem. .280 is there), every bullet company has reload info on their bullet's or just search RELOADING an you will come up with ton's of site's with load info.,also every powder maker has info on their site's as well.

I've done a ton of research, and it appears that my local supplier of 139 SST's has run out of stock... and has no idea when there getting some in. I picked up some 140 nosler ballistic tips, as i've had pretty good luck with those out of every other rifle i've shot them from. I picked up a Nosler reloading book, and got some numbers from it. I am going to start to try and mimic a 3000 fps bullet, and judging by the information in the book, that shouldn't be hard. i'l start at the min load, and work my way up to 3000 fps, watching for pressure signs... (split cases, popped out primers, etc). I'm going to start with RELOADER 19, because a LOT of information has said that hte .280 absolutly loves it. we shall see.
