Full power HW 90 mounts and and scopes

I destroyed two Bushnell Trophy XLT 4x12 - 40 scopes on this gun.
First scope broke in fewer than one whole 500 count tin of pellets on a hard one piece mount.
I've  found that the stock anti walking pin in a hard mount just destroys the gun by plowing a furrow  out the back of the stop pin hole.
I've tried a Dampa mount and had to put my own stop pin in it using a 10-32 allen bolt ground to fit my  gun's holes (that worked), but the  Bushnell XLT still broke in less than a year.

Now I have a Hawke  Eclipse SF 6-24x50 I've gone through half a tin of pellets and it's not busted  - - - yet.
It's mounted with a BKL 1-Pc Mount, 30mm six screw mount.

I noticed that the scope was  walking in the mount.  I tightened that up and it seems OK
The six screws seem to keep the mou8nt from  walking back on the gun.


This scope was recommended by Hawke tech as well as the rep from Pyramid.  The Pyramid rep recommended the mount after a discussion about Dampa mounts and such.

I'll bookmark this post and keep it updated with the on going result - whether I  break this scope or not over time.

If you have had success with a scope and mount combo on your Weihrauch HW 90  Please feel free to post your experiences here too.

My thinking  is that others searching for a scope for this scope-killing-beast-of-a-gun will find this thread and save  themselves from spending money they can't afford on scopes and mounts that they will only have to set aside later on.

It sounds like your ram is over-pressurized. I've used the same scope on my RX-1 for over 15 years and nothing has ever happened to it. I had the ram's air replaced with nitrogen years ago (it could've been argon) - I don't remember exactly which but the rifle came back with more power and it was way easier to cock. Mine is producing a humble 19 fpe now and the shot cycle is about as violent as a HW30.

Anyway the Hawke  Eclipse SF 6-24x50   mounted with a BKL 1-Pc Mount, 30mm six screw seems to be holding up fairly well

I've put s couple 500 ct tins through it.

The range moves when I shoot it. I have to re adjust each time.  Sometimes I have to manipulate both the power and the range because all the range settings fail to focus but operating them both seems to work the kink out.

This is all non conforming performance but the scope hasn't  failed the way the Bushnell did by losing it's aim point.  The Hawke's aim point remains spot on.

I've tried all kinds of scope mount/ring combinations...with very limited success.

i have gone back to open sights on it.

i have the pressure set at 22 BAR. perhaps a reduction in power might get better results.

13.73 grain JSB's are the best performers in it at the moment.

What's the velocity on the JSB's on your RX-1?
Sorry, I don't have a gauge to tell you what PSI mine is charged to. My RX-1 hasn't busted a scope since 1997 but the air was replaced with some kind of inert gas (probably just nitrogen or some kind of argon blend).

i haven't run the RX thru the chrono since before i had it re-built.

max operating pressure is 24 BAR. (running that pressure would require that you would have to have Superman cock it for you... )

i have found that heavier pellets seem to perform better (especially at longer ranges.)...the JSB's, Benjamin cylindrical, Beeman crow magnum etc...

Went through a number of scopes on my .25cal HW90 then back to open sights. Actually does quite well with them. I have the Bar set at 26, the max, because I hunt bigger critters at 50 yards or more. It's the most powerfull AG in my stable. Recently I found a 1 piece mount with 5 mount screws and thought what the heck I'll try another scope, this time a Hawke 4x32 as I was informed the single magnification scopes hold up better to recoil. So far while I haven't shot more than a tin yet it's holding up nicely.

Well I blew up the Hawke  Eclipse SF 6-24x50
It held up pretty well.    First the  parallax  adjustment started going out on me and IU'd have to run it through the full range   of parallax adjustment to get it to adjust. Then finally the power failed and I sent it back.

Unlike Bushnell,  Hawke has a really fast turnaround and unlike Bushell, Hawke didn't hit me up for money.
They just replaced my scope with a new "Endurance" model 30 SF 6-24x50.

No  choice of green illumination on the reticle and the red is not as nice as the one on the Eclipse.  It's a little less defined.

Have just sighted it in.  Repeats nicely.    I really like this scope.  It comes with a  large range wheel making it easier to adjust the parallax.  It is not some big 4 or 6 inch model that would be a bump hazard for anything but a bench gun  It's just a little larger than the usual  maybe a couple inches diameter.

Can't mount the sun shade as my break barrel would  hit it.

I told them what gun I'm using.
The web site says it's  shockproof.   
We'll see.

When I have scope movement, it is because the screws are under torqued.

I bought a Walker FAT wrench, use the recommended torques from the packaging and have never had another scope move.  No glue, Locktite or incantations needed!!!! YOu can contact the manufacturer of your scope bases for torque information but I didn't find them too helpful as they didn't use a torque wrench!!  Amazing. 

In many cases, I was actually getting them too tight on the theory that tight is good, cowboy tight is better.  I damaged a few scopes that way, ruined a few aluminum bases by ripping the threads out, and broke a couple screws not to mention getting messed up Allen screw heads.

I also have had no further damage to scopes, rings, or bases since I got scientific about it.

I shoot an RWS 54 that is reputed to be a scope killer.  It came with a RWS 4-12 scope and thousands of pellets later, I haven't had any problems.  I put one of those clamp on levels to see if I were canting too much, it lasted about 20 pellets.
