R1 safety nonfunctioning

Hi. My San Rafael R1, bought a few years ago from a fine yellow forum member, seems to have a non functioning safety; it pops out when cocked, but does not keep the trigger from being pulled and discharging the rifle. Safety on, safety off, same same. Any ideas here? I would love to get this piece part of the active herd. Thanks, tk

well the gun being that old could have some worn or bent parts or maybe a bad safety button? the trigger unit is easy to remove and inspect, you should be able to see the notch in the safety button to see if its engaging and or blocking the rear sear, I'd look at that to see what's going on first then go from there IMO

I agree with Mark.
Here is what the safety looks like:
Take the action out of the stock (four screws).
Remove the rear trigger pin.
Swing the trigger down towards the muzzle.
The safety and spring will fall out.
If you need a new spring you can use one from a basic ball-point pen.
Probably just dirty.

When putting the trigger back it is better to cock it first. Push down on the lever on top.
Put the safety and spring in (spring first) and swing the trigger back into place.
Slide in pin.
Pull trigger to un-cock the trigger.
Easy to do.

tk, your post was answered this morning on another forum (color) by one of the best tuners of these guns but for some reason his post disappeared. Sometimes I don't understand that place...anyhoo he said it's more of a sear problem in the older models due to a pin location problem, or so much as I remember. You may want to email him and ask. Hope it's ok to interject as such just trying to help out. I've got the same gun love it but when you cock it you must use a hard "set" at the end of the stroke or the safety will not fully set. Not a problem for me but always told to whoever want's to shoot it. Link to tuner:

Replace your spring. Get one in a basic click-type ball-point pen. But before you do anything, loosen the rear trigger guard screw a turn or two. This screw cannot be too tight. No charge.

Good Luck.
Exactly what I told him to do. Hmmm, screws, piston, seals, spring, trigger. I guess I can say I am a tuner now, too. Nope. I read Tom Gaylord's book.

GUNK. Lots of it all through the trigger group. The safety was so gunked that it did not eject when the trigger group was removed and I had to push it out. One thing led to another and the R1 is completely apart. Fun stuff, tk

Birchwood Casey Gun Scrubber (or brake cleaner) will clean that trigger. Very little lubrication is required and only in the little hole in the rear of the trigger. The safety just needs to be clean. Remember to cock the trigger before you put it back. Easier that way. Put in the front pin, slide the safety spring then the safety in, then swing the trigger up and put in the second pin. Pull the trigger to fire the trigger. Put back in the action and try it out. Good luck.
