I would never do someone elses gun but I do my own with fantastic results! I just don't feel right opening up someone elses gun for some reason. Same reason I will not ride another friends motorcycle regardless of the fact I have been riding for many years and raced a bit. I just feel like Karma will catch up to me.

The website indicates 'ease of installation' or something. Does that apply to elderly newbies?

Which kit as well as which power level are you looking for? Not to mention, which rifle?

Hello Oldgringo..............to me yes it is. If you have the right basic tools to push pins depending on what brand gun your asking about and a spring compressor I think anyone is able. A Weihrauch or at least my 97 has a screw on cap which makes it easy and my old model 34 I had to use push pin rods to pop them out and keep the spring from flying out.

I do not recommend these kit for guns like the 97's or R1 type guns! because of their plastic construction! their to flimsy and will break or crack easily! these gun have a screw off end cap to get to the internals of the spring parts and if you have no experience on how to or the correct method of removing and re installing the end cap you asking for trouble IMO! I would buy a steel spring kit like a JM or V-Mach! these kits are 100% better then the Vortek plastic! and allot smoother and fool proof! I have used almost every aftermarket spring kit out there and I will not use VT spring kits! especially in a gun like were talking about! sorry guy's but it is what it is! you get what you pay for! you cannot beat JM or V-Mach products JMO

Mark has his opinion but I have never had a issue so you have to decide in the end. I have also known many a folk who have used the Vortek system with nary an issue. Maybe if you have someone with less than very precise and a careful touch may be a issue but I highly endorse the Vortek system.
Got nothing bad to say either of the JM system either. No experience with a V-Mach so I cannot comment.

Search YT for videos about field stripping the HW95 or Beeman R9. It seems doable, but I haven't done one yet. Punch pins are available at a hardware store for ?$5. I fastened a long clamp to some lumber for a compressor...$40. USE GLOVES, GLASSES and protect your body as there is tension and if things are not square, things can go boing across the room. The 12pound kits will be easier. Two people for a few critical minutes might make easy work.
I did my 77 with the PG2 kit and as Mark611 says, there is a knack to it as I ended up crunching and then removing about 1/2" of the plastic sleeve on one side. I didn't have my preferred compressor at the time and did my best not to mess it up, but did it anyway. I think if doing it over I'd gently bevel the sleeve to give it a bit of help aligning. I initially was going back and forth slightly during the cap install with a different compressor and thought I was in the clear, but I wasn't. The cheaper kit is probably almost as good and maybe my recommendation for the first time around as it doesn't have the outer sleeve. Do a good cleaning of the internal tube to remove any lube to avoid dieseling, or in my case detonation. Some guys say just do the spring and/or seal with stock parts, but it seems like spending another $50 isn't a bad move since you're already into it that far.

I've done a R9 with a JM kit and a Vortek kit both were very nice the Vortek maybe a tad bit quieter. I just did a R1 with a Vortek kit and a full Krytox lube only about 200 shots through it so the jury is still out. It was bone stock original and 30 years old now it's a smooth laser powerhouse so far... The R9 is not bad to tear down the R1 can be a little hairy the last few threads of the end cap. As far as tuners if you check the Vortek website you will see John in Pa. Good dude nice work he did a barrel on a 34 chop choke and crown and while he had it buttoned the piston too all for a very fair price and with quick turn around. If you want the best of the best there is only one...Paul Watts. All just MHO.
