Nitro Venom stock-build (thumb-hole)

I've asked some questions, shaved a template from Styrofoam and now it's time...
Had some nice-grained cherry so I decided to make a thumb-hole stock for my Nitro Dusk.
The following thread will show progress (I hope) and my build.

Todd you have a good start on your project. It looks great. I love cherry wood. When I did my first and only one, all I had were
some old strips of walnut I had to glue up. But it came out Ok. Here is a pic of it when I got done. Craig

Now we're getting somewhere. Had been putting off cutting into the stock for just fear of ruining it... Going to have to sometime so, here we go:
Couple pics of the comb shaping and a two of the channel.
Everything has been done with a table saw, rasps, a couple chisels and a small drill press. Trying to figure out how to round out the barrel channel.

The cocking roller channel is done as well as the trigger guard and slot.
That barrel channel is going to baffle me for a bit yet with simple tools. 1 3/8" cove? How to do it?

Next step: fitting the barrel.
This was especially a lot of work without a router bit (need a 1 3/8" cove plunge bit that I didn't want to buy for one or two projects), so carving, chiseling and sanding I went.
It's getting there. Forming a contour for the "artillery hold" just ahead of the trigger guard as well.

Drilled and mounted the front. Have a little binding where the cocking lever rides back into the stock, but not too bad.
Took a single shot, feels good. Still need to come up with a butt-pad to lengthen the reach a little for me.

Finally at a point to get some stain on it. Red chestnut should bring out the grain in the cherry even more.

Lacquered finish. Satin, and will put some steel wool to it to dull the shine a little more.
I really like how it turned out. Not the most elegant stock like I've seen around here, but very functional. Thumb-hole and artillery hold platform fit me to a "T". As they say, the first scratch is the worst, already fell off the bench (prior to barrel installation), oh well, going to get more anyway.
Just need to install a butt plate, the scope and get her sighted in.
Thinking about making a custom "grip cap" (not sure what it's actually called, the cap that covers the end of the handle/grip of the stock). Any suggestions?

Thanks. It really wasn't that "difficult" (opinion), the patience thing was the issue for me. This was done with basic hand and power tools, don't have any machining experience, etc., so I had to be a little creative in how I carved out some of the channels and such.
I'll post the final product when I decide on a recoil pad.

VERY nice work! Beautiful choice of wood. I am doing my first as well. I think I will cut the action/ barrel inlet and then Bed it to keep the tedious chisel/rasp work down. Congrates, You built a BEAUTIFUL rifle

Finished.
Leapers Mil-dot, trimmed and sanded down recoil pad from an old Rem700.
Love the way it holds and balances (that was just an accidental bonus!).

Really nice work. I like the lines. They compliment the metal components very well. Cherry was a good choice for your first stock. It's so uniform and predictable plus it becomes more beautiful with age. Congratulations on an excellent project.
