Looking to get a gun with more power than my HW30S next. Would you get an HW50S or is there a similar gun you'd recomend? Looking for a little more punch, but still easy cocking.

The only thing that would keep me from the HW50S is the galling issue - otherwise I am totally happy with HW. I just figure for $379.00 maybe I can find one that does not need aftermarket work. Do any others come close in quality, or would you get the 50 and just put in the cocking lever insert?

I took my new HW50S out of the stock yesterday. It has several hundred pellets through it. I either don't know what to look for or mine is not galling. I hope it's the latter.

The 50S is great. I love the power level, but because of the articulated cocking arm, the cocking effort is not far from my 95. I installed the cocking arm insert before my first shot. It is not too difficult. You might want to look at the 95 for a few bucks more($398 at AOA).

+1 for JimL911's suggestion.

Seeing how much more popular the HW95 is compared to the 50, says alot.
The Hw95 does not have the cocking lever galling issue that the HW30 is known for. ( so no need to fix it)
The step up in power from your HW30 to the HW50, is a smaller step than going with a Hw95 (R9)
For a $20 more out of your wallet,, basically same cocking effort (often seen comparison on these forums),
I would go with the HW95 every time.

I went through this decision (50 vs 95) last year, and was shopping for a 95 when I found an FWB124, that now fills
the slot in my quiver of airguns that the HW95 would have also filled perfectly.

BTW I would get the HW95 over the R-9 because you get the open sights with the HW95 and not the R9.
Although I have scopes for both my HW30s and FWB124, I have been shooting them with peep sights for
the last 9 months, and have no plans to put the scopes back on for the near future.

I too have read about the galling issue.. I ordered one of these yesterday from Pyramid (.22) and did my homework like you are doing before purchasing. There is a review I read and I tried to find it now for you but don't remember the site, sorry. Anyways the reviewer mentioned that some had complained about galling but he was saying it was on the older version, not the newer 's' version. The newer 's' version is quite a bit different gun. sad but at times we only hear about the bad things and not the good...

another vote for the HW95 or the R9! they can be detuned to 50's power levels and you don't have the cocking arm issues to deal with! JMO

Ditto....already mentioned that to him....but as I recall from our conversation.. the cost to him in Portugal is nearly double what we pay for that one model (95/R9) . The 50 is far less expensive.

I just tore my 50 down the other day...after the initial light scoring that took place when I first got it, I see no further scoring nor reason for concern....not to say this would be the case for all 50s models.

Thanks guys. I think I have enough info on this one now. I like the light weight and size of my 30S a lot - and I think that's going to put the 50S at the top of the list as it's still pretty light.

I bought the HW50s because I liked my HW30s so much with a Diopter set up. For a scoped gun I was looking for the trigger and size but in a 12ftlb package. For me out of the box it was a disappointment, this one was buzy and unpleasant to shoot. Petey helped me out suggesting the slight detuned Vortek kit, it solved all the problems and still feels like a hot rod with a pleasant snap to the shot cycle.

I wore my cocking arm in, it was smooth by the end of the first 500 tin of pellets. From about 100 - 300 range though it was rough and disconcerting, its just an oddity that it was designed that way. I do like the short split in the stock the mechanism allows to be used.

Thats why i think the R9/hw95 its so popular on USA and not on another places, cause you can get them with the same €€ than a hw50

No Insert.
Installing an insert on a 50s has been a no win situation for me.....the install is nothing like the 30s and has failed to produce the desired results.....I have many tins through my 50s and as I stated earlier...the tube was scored slightly at first and then no more...I do use moly on the cocking lever (top & Bottom) ....the amount of scoring my 50s has incurred would cause me no concern.
Trying to fit the insert to the 50s is just a sore subject myself and others have elected to walk away from.

I will say this .....if someone wishes to attempt an insert on the 50s and it comes unseated and then gets lodged in the tube between the lever and the piston and all else.....be prepared to spend "hours" to clear it.
A few scores ...I can live with.

Just put some Moly on it and shoot.

The HW50 has a nice quick shot cycle to it and darn accurate. I own both R7 & HW50 and don't have problems w/ galling.
