I have taken Crats and Bandits with my .177, but it wasn't humane......

Largest clean kills out to 45yards will on TreeRats and smaller birds..

head or body shots, I know my titan goes cleanly through a 1/4 inch particale board at 70 yards, would a head shot with in 35 yards do it on say a coon or opossum

Sure, but they may flop around a bit.

I have killed both at much closer distances and it wasn't easy, they did flop and dance and took a couple more shots to put down...

I was not as well informed on shot placement on these critters when I did it so I didn't know how hard it was to get to their fuse box, they are tough animals...

I've seen good sized 'coons killed at up to 30-ish yards with .177 air rifles shooting heavy (10.5 grain) domed pellets in that power range or even a bit less, but shot placement is everything, and I would recommend a larger caliber, since things don't always go to plan, for a little more fudge factor.

Read some of Shadow's hunting stories in the hunting gate.  I believe he shoots a 177 caliber rifle almost exclusively and he takes  C-rats and bandits all the time. I'm not sure what pellets he uses but I'm sure he'll be one of the first to tell you that shot placement is the most important aspect.

I use the .177 for hunting in a 12FPE rifle at 35yds or less for most small stuff up to small coon.  I did a 12lb coon at 28-30yds with 18FPE and JSB heavy, and nailed him, head down between the ears.  It works.

That smaller CRat I killed the other night was a head on shot at about 25' and she went right down, now the big one that was another story...
