Received my HW-95 .177 caliber today from ARH. Velocity through chronograph using seven grain Misterkugeln pellets was: 971, 970, 980, 983, 971, 969, 973, 974, 974, and 970. Pellets in breech seem loose compared to my HW-55. Does any one have suggestions as to the type of pellets I should use? Does the velocity seem correct? I will try to attach photos but it is not going well so I will send this post first and then send photos later.

Congrats Bob on a very fine rifle. I have a Beeman R9, which is exactly the same rifle as your Weihrauch, just been rebranded. Mine is in .20 cal and shoots very well with the JSB and H&N Field Target Trophy pellets. Both are domed pellets and offer good aerodynamics at longer ranges past 30 yards. Based on your chronograph results, you are getting over 14.5 foot lbs of energy out of those pellets. I'd say that's a nice and healthy HW95 and right where it should be. Since you said pellets are a bit loose, you might try some RWS Superdomes, or a pellet with a larger head diameter such as the H&N Field Target trophies or JSBs in 4.52 head size. For now just shoot it and have fun breaking in your new rifle!

Hello Bob,
A good choice indeed. I own a UK spec' 95K and it likes RWS Superdomes the best. I have tried about six different pellet types and they are the best by far. The Superdomes are a god fit without being too tight. Let us know what works out best for you.

Sounds like another , typical , beautiful German product to me .
Heres a bit of info for ya to dool over , Diana 460 Magnum .177
H&N 10.49grain , 862.63 average FPS , 17.34 Ft/lbs.
Zeroed at 10 metres , 1.2" high at 30 metres , and zero at 50 metres .

I have an R9 .177 with a Vortek PG2 kit installed and it's shooting JSB 7.9's at 952 for right around 16 fpe. You can bring the numbers down a little by shooting a heavier pellet. Most R9's/HW95's like Beeman FTS or JSB pellets. H&N makes the pellets for Beeman and I've shot them too, but the FTS is slightly more accurate in my gun. Shoot one or two tins of pellets and run it thru the chrony again. The numbers might change once everything settles in. Congrats on a nice shooter

thanks guys just tried crossman premier heavy 10.5 gr. they fit breach tighter
744 , 736, 742, 737, 740 feet/second. RWS supermags 9.3 802, 787, 798, 793, 785
less then a tin through rifle trying to learn artillery hold.

The Hw95/R9 is my favorite springer and all but one of the ones I've owned/tuned/sold shot 7.9 grain Crosman Premier light pellets (the ones in the die lot marked 1250 count box). The one "odd ball" shot Beeman FTS pellets the best. Here are a couple targets I scanned when comparing the grouping ability of pellets compared to the CPLs...........all groups shot were hunter class field target style (sittin on a bucket with cross sticks), not bench rested.

Beeman FTS vs CPL at 30 and 40 yards............

Notice that the FTS would put 2 or three shots real close together with one or two that spread the group. This was typical FTS grouping for all my HW springers except one, and here is a target shot by the lone odd ball.......

Here is a more recent target when I was comparing CPLs with different Air Arms pellets (rebadged JSBs)..........

Anywhoo........IMHO, it might pay to simply try out a box of CPLs as well as some others, but the only pellet that has come close to CPL accuracy with my R9s is the 7.9 grain JSB Exact Express.

By the way, I personally don't want/need a CPL pellet velocity in excess of 900fps (preferring around 860-880 fps) so all my .177 R9s have been home tuned to around the 13fpe level. Matter of fact, the newest R9 I bought last year wasn't even chronied in factory trim, it was immediately opened up and the "power plant" was swapped out for a weaker one of my own.

Attached is a photo of a target I shot today at our 50 foot indoor range using Premier 10.5 grain heavy pellets - five shots per target. Looks promising! Maybe with the heavier pellets and lower velocity it may group better.

Also I may be doing better with the artillery hold.

Bob - In my HW95 22cal H&N FTT shoot basically 1 ragged hole @ 20 yards and my HW97KT did the same thing in 177 .... I think that the german guns like german pellets ...

Since my last post did a lube tune. Put moly on piston and tar on spring. It seemed to reduce buzz. Velocity is not as close as before. Ordered a Vortek tune kit today. Will keep you posted.

Tried 2 different pellets in my HW97K .22 cal today. The 6 shots at 25 yds with RWS Superdome Field Line 14.5 gr could be covered with a dime. With no scope adjustment, the JSB Exact Diablo 15.8 gr were all over the place for the first 3, and the other 3 could be covered with a dime. The heavier pellets hit about 2 inches below the dead on aim. In the last few days I had shot about 100 of the RWS Superdomes and a few of the JSBs. It seems to like the Superdomes the best but I will give the JSBs another try with more pellets and scope adjustment for them and see if they will need a number of shots before the group shrinks.

IMHO, if you put enough "tar" on the spring to kill twang, you also put on enough to make the gun a bit inconsistent and another issue with using "tar" to kill twang is the fact that the "detwang" can also "wear off" with time. Again....In My Humble Opinion.......the proper way to kill twang is with properly fitted guides and I think that you'll find the Vortek kit to be a great solution!

I keep reading how you down turn your rifles and see how you machined your pistons. I assume that is to lower velocity. Do you feel the lower velocity makes the shot cycle and accuracy that much better? I plan to use my rifle inside at fifty feet and do outside paper punching at 50 yards. I am reluctant to shorten the Vortek spring kit at this time. What are your thoughts?

LOL.......I've only detuned my R9 for the last year or so and I'm currently playing with a 12fpe tune to get a handle on how they shoot. I have made a few custom R9 pistons, but mostly they're modified with oring sealed piston caps, and that was doe because I didn't like the "temperature induced poi shifts" that I was getting with conventional parachute seals. The reduced power tunes are easier to cock, have a nicer shot cycle, and PERHAPS easier to shoot accurately, however in years past I've tuned my oring sealed .177 HW springers to shoot CPLs in the 900fps range and I had days when the accuracy was stellar!

LOL......yesterday I was zeroing my 12fpe detuned R9 at 25 yards and here is a partial scan of the target shot hunter class field target style (sittin' on a bucket restin' the gun on cross sticks)...........

LOL......I was in the process of shooting bulls and I was grouping OK (for me) when a fly landed on the target..........the splay was the first shot at the fly at 25 yards. Today I was shooting at only 10 yards and splatted another fly, however the first shot missed but the fly was splatted with the second shot when it re-landed.

Anywhoo........12fpe more accurate than 14fpe, well, I don't know but it certainly is more pleasant to shoot and cocking is easier! One thing for sure though, at 12fpe the pellet drops more at 50 yards and is more "wing driftier" than it is at 14fpe when shot from my .177 R9!

Attached is a photo of six five shot groups shot at 45 foot inside with JSB 10.34 grain, 4.52 head diameter. Although not through the same hole okay group. Point of aim stayed constant. Chronograph 802, 805, 805, 808, and 806. The rifle has a Vortek PD2 spring kit and I have a nylon top hat installed instead of the metal one.
