Last little red devil I had gotten was in the spring. I have seen them a few times during the summer far off in the trees but they never come into shooting range , but with the cold now they must be getting short of easy food. This guy was at about 20 yards or so , I had the 850 keeping warm so I grabbed that and loaded a RWS SHP took aim at the sweet spot and let it fly! I heard the wapp as the SHP hit and he flipped over , a short death dance followed. The SHP hit below the left ear and exited just behind the left front leg.

Nice!! I used to pop those all day long with my Sheridan (it was his at the time) at my Grandparents farm in Cranesville, WV when I was growing up. They were in the pines and it was like a shooting gallery.

Dave,

The red squirrel is on my list to hunt and harvest one some day. I have never seen one. I once saw a flying squirrel, but never a red squirrel. Maybe I need to make a goal of hunting all squirrels species that live in the U.S. with a airgun....something like the big five.....but with squirrels.

That bushytail has gigantic eyes, almost the giant squid of the squirrel world.

I would assume Fox as Reds and Fox are two different squirrels. Some call the Fox a Red but a fox is HUGE, bigger than a grey, and a red is smaller than a grey.

What jonesin said...Fox are the largest, gray black and white are all the same species, medium sized, and reds are the smallest, maybe twice the size of a chipper...never seen a flying squirrel in Ohio or Texas, though. Joel.

Have to say I've only got three of those. Fox, Grey and Red. Chippers in moderation. Never a white, black or flying. I thought flying were protected? I don't think we have them here in Virginia but I could be wrong.

The five I am think of are:

The little red squirrel that live in the pines of the north!

The southern fox squirrel that live in the long needle yellow pines of the south. This one is the biggest, he is black and white and has a call like a monkey. Scary at dark in a tree stand with no were to go (Climber).

The fox squirrel of the midwest, the one Cliff is speaching of!

The Gray Demarva fox squirrel. I need to do more rearch on this one. It is said that live in the pines trees of lower Delaware.

The last one would be the Abert squirrel of the Southwest area!
