Target Printing

I was wondering what type of paper others use for their printed targets? Regular copy paper, the white 20 lb. weight stuff tears quite a bit with my pistol. (FAS 604) I tried a heavier 100 lb. weight paper that is supposed to be for dividers in folders, and that also tears. Does everyone else print on something different or just back up the targets with cardboard or something like that? Just wondering. Thanks

WELCOME to the GTA Forums and Target Shooting Matches !!!!
I'm using recycled 14lb. junk paper, it seems to work best.
But don't ask me where to get it, I bought a case of it years ago, and used it for scrap until now.
If you take a new flat piece of cardboard as a target backer, you will find that helps a lot !

That works, plus "baking" the targets. Turn on the oven for a short while, turn it off again, put the target inside for a short while.

I use the plastic corrugated sheets you see used for advertising. The local tobacco store always has them that they throw away. You can cut them to size. The weather does not hurt them if they get wet. Use light staples to secure the target.

Cheap construction paper work pretty well too. Hard paper makes the best target for paper punching. Cleaner holes.

What I do is use standard printing paper in an inkjet printer. I look around work and find old cardboard boxes and cut 8-1/2x11 retangles. I put the target on top of the cardboard and staple both to my 1-1/2" thick backstop. Cardboard backing helps get a cleaner hole.
Happy Shooting!!!!

I normally just tape my targets printed on regular 20# copy paper onto a piece of cardboard.
When the target gets ratty, I simply replace the cardboard backer and I get clean holes again.
Another is to use heavier paper. I've used 60# cardstock and that has worked just fine.
Finally, are you shooting WADCUTTERS ?
Anything other than wadcutters and you will very likely not get a clean hole.

Don`t know...but I think it`s just regular printing paper my photocopy place uses. I just print out one target sheet and then photocopy 50 or 100 of them....less wear and tear on my printer.
Use a cardboad backing for the target sheets so you get a nice clean hole instead of tears.

Thanks for all the suggestions. I am using wadcutters. Using a FAS AP-604 with RWS Diablo Basics right now. I've tried Gamo Match, Crosman Wadcutter Premium, etc. I thought the tearing might be because of the low velocity. I'm getting around 380 fps with the 7.0 grain RWS pellets. Therefore, I also tried the lead free Crosman SSP Hollow Points, it's pretty much a wadcutter, but only about 4 grains in weight. The SSP gave me a velocity of 460 fps, but I still got the tearing in the target. (However, I also get tearing when I use my IZH 46M, and I know the velocity is up to snuff with that pistol.) I've settled on the RWS pellets for the FAS, and the cardboard backing does work, for the first target. However, if I put a second target up, and one of the pellets hits near a previous hole in the cardboard, the printer paper targets will tear for one or two rings distance. I guess I'll just have to chage the backer for each target I use during the Match Event and I might try baking the paper as suggested. It doesn't bother me so much when I'm just practicing. Yet, in a match I wouldn't want to up my score just because the target ripped. Thanks again.

I use 65lb card stock. Picked up a pack of 250 sheets from Staples one day. Don't remember how much it cost, but I get nice clean circles from wadcutters with little to no tearing... usually. Prints out real nice too.
I also put my targets up against cardboard but that's more to stop the pellets from bouncing back out of the pellet trap (don't ask). The holes in the board that come from repeated use don't drastically affect the heavier paper.

I would say to try using a light pistol pellet like these, but you are already using a 7 gram pellet.
- H&N Match High Speed, 7.55gr
- RWS R-10 "light" the 7 grain pellet, NOT the 8.2 grain
- Beaman Laser, 7.7gr
- RWS Meisterkugeln Pistol, 7gr
- RWS Hobby, 7gr
If you are shooting regulation 10m targets, you might try some Edelmann targets. They punch nice clean holes, unlike the the lousey targets (that I have from years ago) that tear easily.

A piece of masking tape on the back over the bull also helps.
