Regular matches don't start up until April when winter is behind us.  Here's your chance to get in some off season indoor (or outdoor) shooting until then.  Shoot safe and have fun!

There are two matches in this post:  a 5 meter air pistol match and a 10 meter air rifle match.  Shoot one, shoot the other, or shoot both.  I'll change the title of this first post to “Results...” and add the scores up top when its over.

Rules for Both Matches:
Shoot as many times as you like before posting your results once.  You cannot change or supersede your posted scores after posting.  Post your scores and target image in one reply to this thread for each match, or scores and images for both matches in one reply - your choice, but do it by 21:00 EST (GMT-5) on the end date of the match.

Use a target with “45” in the file name if you are shooting 177 caliber pellets.  Use a target with “55” in the file name if you are shooting 0.20 or larger caliber pellets.

Shots are scored according to the highest value of the target scoring zone or ring that is touched by a circle centered over your shots on the target.  The diameter of this circle should be 4.5mm (0.177 inch) on "45" targets and 5.5mm (0.22 inch) on "55" targets.  The head of a wadcutter pellet comes in handy for this (the pellet skirt may be too large), as does a scoring gauge.  If any part of a scoring ring (demarcation line between the scoring zones) is touched by the circle, including even the outside edge of the scoring ring line, the shot is scored the higher value of the two scoring zones.  Note the 10 and "X" scoring zones are not labeled.  Exceptions to this scoring guidance are noted on the bottom of the targets with the ring diameters.  For example, an "X" is scored on most "55" targets only if the circle completely covers (i.e., removes) the center dot.  Rings are a little smaller and the "X" rule is different on "55" targets so that there is no advantage or disadvantage to using larger 22 caliber pellets.

Both matches are 20 shots.  You decide how many shots per bull.  If you need to use two or more target sheets, that is fine as long as they are shot consecutively as a potential intended match entry.

Targets shot before the match start date (the date of this post, not the latest edit date) are not permitted.  Please write the date shot on your target and post your target image and score using the following format (without descriptive labels) to make it easier for me to consistently summarize the final match results:

If you use a 12 bull target and the version you printed has a line border around the center two bulls, these bulls only are for unlimited sight in and practice shots.  SHOTS ON THESE TWO BULLS DO NOT COUNT FOR SCORE IF THEY ARE BORDERED.  If no bulls on the target you use are bordered, then all bulls and shots count for score.  The worst 20 shots should be scored if there are more than 20 shots on targets without bordered practice bulls.


5 Meter Air Pistol Match Rules and Target

20 shots total.  Grip may be one or two handed.  Shooting position must be standing (seated if you cannot stand), with the pistol unsupported.  The shooter's feet must be behind or touching a line 5 meters from the target face.  5 meters is 16 feet and 5 inches.  Any pistol type or sight is allowed.  No special shooting clothing, shooting shoes, or equipment allowed.  Time limit is 20 minutes.

10 Meter Air Rifle Match Rules and Target

20 shots total.  Shooting position must be offhand, standing (seated if you cannot stand), with the rifle unsupported.  The shooter's feet must be behind or touching a line 10 meters (or 25 feet if targets with “25FT” in the file names are used) from the target face.  10 meters is 32 feet and 10 inches.  Any rifle type or sight is allowed.  No special shooting clothing or shooting shoes allowed.  Slings may be used.  Time limit is 20 minutes.

I'm in for both AP and AR.  I've got an AP entry scanned, but will hold it until I get in some rifle time over the next weekend or two.  I expect we'll some entries trickle in by then!

Yesterday I was having a hard time seeing the black cross hairs of my rifle scope against the three black rings of the rifle target.  Then I had a great idea...  use the illuminated cross hair feature on the scope.  I have never use the illuminated feature in the three years I have had the scope and it finally came in useful.

Finally broke the barrier of getting a mid 170s score without "questionable" hole punches.  This one is about as representative of as good as I get right now.  Been hovering in the upper 160s, low 170s all week and finally found a comfortable stance to produce something without a wince after knowing I should have aborted a shot...

You guys get such clean holes on your targets. I have been shooting the last two weeks trying different things. I read all the threads about getting clean holes and I have been printing on 100 lb card stock paper. I use RWS hobby wad cutter pellets and it still seems to tear a bit. I sure would like to know your secret. I see your targets and there is no doubt what you score.

Try backing up your targets with cardboard. I find that the cardboard from soda or beer cases works best. Corrugated works but not so good. Someone else said that tape on the back of the target works also. When I print targets I use 60 lb card stock. Hope this helps some.

Try placing your target against a layer of duct seal.  There are several threads on containers to hold the duct seal in place.  I tried all combinations of printer paper and cardboard backers but duct seal works the best for me.

I use cardboard backer for mine. I replace it about every half dozen targets or so.

I've found velocity, well supported targets and crisp thick paper are my friends for clean target holes.

Velocity.  My pellet holes get ragged and torn as the CO2 cartridges approach empty.  My Daisy 853 rifle and Crosman 2300T pistol are no speed demons (~500 fps), and the holes are not as clean as those produced by my QB78D (~600 fps).  Those TX200 holes up there look great.  A TX200 is a powerful rifle.

Well supported targets.  Placing against duct seal is a great idea.  I don't do that, but have found holes are cleaner in my small trap (smaller targets "flex" less in the trap) than in my large trap (see:   Pellet Traps).  I also use my last target as a backer for the new one.

Paper.  I've found "card stock" papers with a rough construction paper finish do not yield the cleanest holes.  My last order of amazon's cheapest shipped thick paper was Wausau Paper, "Exact Index", 110lb, "Smooth Finish".  Works pretty good.  Hope I can still order it.
