I am about to purchase a Discovery and now I am wondering whether I should go with a .177 or . 22 caliber. Talked to Mike I believe at TKO and he said he prefers the .177 with a heavier pellet. Any comments would be appreciated. Thanks! Shawn

Guess it all depends on what you want to do with it; both calibers have positives to recommend one over another. What do you expect to be using the Discovery for?

what are you going to do with it?
the .177 may be a little more accurate, but the .22 is going to hit much harder.

Gonna hunt with it a bit but mostly shoot, I just want something to get lots of trigger time and even .22 shells are getting crazy expensive. I am gonna put a TKO muzzle brake on it so as I can shoot in the yard. I saw that with the heavier .177 pellets I can get them to hit almost as hard as the .22 caliber. I may shoot some pigeons and such but I hunt with my other guns so as I said accuracy is most important. Thanks! Shawn

Then the .177 may serve you best. Not all that much difference in the price of good heavy weight .177's vs .22's, but you might get lucky and have it shoot the Crosman heavies (in a Tin) well...and those you can pick up at the local 'mart.

Am lucky to have .177, 20, 22, and 25 guns...each caliber has some advantages...but for most of my shooting, the .177 works just fine.

.177 with heavy pellets sounds like a winner to me. Mine is .22 and it's crazy nice...I've never had an opportunity to shoot heavy .177's but imagine it would be a good combination with a Disco. There are a lot more choices in pellet weight today than when I was shooting .177 caliber. Let us know what you decide.

The .22 Has a large advantage over the .177 for both accuracy and hunting IMO. The pellets are heavier which allow for a more stable flight even if a tad bit of wind is present. Don't get me wrong, nothing wrong with .177, just my opinion.

My .22 Disco with TKO, Bipod and Matching sling, stock re-finished to blonde.

Both calibers will be fine!
I have 1 pcp, in .22 cal, its pushing 30fpe with 18.3gr jsb heavies.
I also have a heavy hitting 350 magnum chambered in 177 cal at 18fpe with 10.3gr JSB heavies
Both penetrate the same depth, what ever I hit with either, if shot placement is spot on, it's not walking away.

Thanks folks, I have found .177 that weigh as much as 14 grains. I am still up in the air as I have watched several videos and see the .177 are killers out to 60 yards with pin point accuracy but as said the .22 cals buck the wind a bit better and hit harder. Keep the responses coming and I will decide by this evening. Either way I am gonna send off to TKO after I get it shot in and have it tuned and a brake installed by Mike. I think it will be a winner!! Shawn

Mine started as a .177 ,shot that for a year. I shot some tremendous groups in that caliber at 40 yds. provided there was little breeze. A few months ago I converted to a .22 barrel and it shoots very well out to 70 yds. It can hit a 2 inch spinner 8 out of 10, for me that is good shootin. .22 pellets are a bit more expensive but I like that size better.I think the breech is sized for .22 IMO. So if shooting shorter distances .177 is fine , for longer shots I'd go .22.

Get whatever will suit your purposes now. It only takes a barrel, bolt and o-ring (~$40) from Crosman, and a 1/2 hour, to change the caliber.

Yeah it did. My Disco started life in .177 and I converted to .22, thanks to jimmie_lee. I am going to get another Disco in .177...fun to shoot and pellet selection...although in .177 I shot the Crosman Ultra Magnums in 10.5 grain exclusively. 50 yard Starling killers.

The only concern that I would have in banking your decision on .177 heavies is that you never know if you gun will like those pellets. Each rifle is different but you can't choose what it likes.

Just a thought.

I have a disco in .22 and I'm loving it. it hits hard and accurately. I have not shot it over 40 yards because my home range does not allow it. I can get dime size groups at the distance. Granted not all the time but frequent enough.

Here is a group I shot today @40 yards with a light breeze.

Thanks guys, I decided to go with the .22 cal.! Where I live by an airport it is always windy even on days when it is calm a mile from my house, I still have a breeze. I am getting this too shoot in the yard for more trigger time and it will save me from dragging all my guns and bench and what not down to my shooting spot. I am gonna set up a bench at the house and make a backstop consisting of a wooded box filled with dirt and a bullet trap. I already have a Center Point 3-9 with the mil-dot to put on it and after I shoot it for a while I will be sending it to TKO for a tune and muzzle-brake. Should be a perfect back yard gun with the TKO brake. Thanks for everyones input!!! Shawn

I'm glad you chose the the .22 IMHO a .22 offer more opportunity. Better flight with a breeze and way more FPE available.
I became very bias after getting the disco ( my bad, I know )

You'll be glad you got the .22! I was the same way, I think everyone is....but once you shoot .22 and go back to .177 the smaller caliber seems like childs play. Plus I have very large hands so the .22 is much easier to work with.

Gecoguy, I wear a size 18 ring so my hands are pretty big as well. Now my problem is Pyramyd is out of stock on the .22 cals and Walmart will not ship to NYS as all the large places like Cabelas and Bass Pro and such will not ship to NY state either. Hopefully Pyramyd will have them in by the end of the week. Shawn
