Does the rear sight on your HW wobble?

Hi fellas, been lurking a lot lately, sponging up some good info. I have a HW-30 that I've had for about a year. I put a Vortek kit in it over the summer. While I am underwhelmed with the power levels, the gun DOES group, quietly. I've grown fond of shooting across my house at small dots at 15yds and can coax groups as small as 1/2" offhand, which is not bad for me. I do feel like the gun and certain other shooters can do much better than I can do.
Anyway, since it was new, I noticed that my rear sight can move freely about 1/16" side to side, no matter how the elevation is adjusted. The Elevation screw turns very slightly as this happens. The movement appears to be around the elevation adjustment screw, and the rear sight screw that holds the metal leaf in the barrel is as tight as all get out. I could not tighten or loosten it. I assume it's crimped or threadlocked.
I don't really see how it could be a defect as the design just seems to allow this kind of thing, relying on the ball detent on the bottom of the elevation screw to hold it securely, but it doesn't hold it securely. Nothing seems like it was assembled wrong or machined out of tolerance. The "dang" thing just wobbles.
I've become habituated to nudging the rear sight to the left just before I turn off the safety. Like I said, the gun does appear to work fine as long as the rear sight is nudged consistently. It just really rustles my jimmies that I spent 300+ on an airgun that has such a crappy, unstable open sight design. Just a reminder to really go over your new gun before the 30 day return window is up.

So if this is so common are there fixes? How do you iron-sighters deal with it?

Hi Dr. Solo, Welcome to this forum...
I love my HW30S because of its lower power, coupled with top of the line quality and accuracy.
Your rear sight issue sounds familiar.....I swithched to Williams FP-AG rear peep sight not long after I got it.
Maybe this was one of the reasons.
If I Remember Correctly, IIRC, either the front mounting screw or the alignment pin just in front of the
screw was too long, or didnt fit correctly. The pin is only visable if you take the sight off the barrel.
Foggy memory, but I think I very carefully used a file or dremel to get the pin sized to fit properly.
Didn't take much, and by then I had ordered the peep and never looked back.
3/32", .093", aperature disc works best for my uses, indoor and out up to 25 yards.
Eventually I also found clear front insert discs, with a beveled hole in the center, that
work much better than the factory metal insert shapes. These are what is used in current
top level competitions. If you want go that way, I got them from a guy on the AirGunBBS (England)
from a guy that goes by UKNeil. Was great to deal with.
Did try a Hawke Airmax 2-7x32 AO scope for a bit, but I love shoooting peeps.
Have then on my HW30S, FWB 124, Walther LGR, '70 Sheridan Blue Streak, and one of my Crosman 1377's.
Hope this helps...
Have fun ..... Safely.
