XL1100 testing
«

After spending a few months and a few k rounds, i have learned a bit about the XL's. For one, they can be extremely accurate. They are also extremely powerful. 950 fps with a 14.3 cphp, or 900 fps with a 16grain pred. now, for the fun part. Accuracy.
I was able to consistantly shoot nickle sized groups at 20 yds. this was, however... if i kept up my end of the deal. it was semi hold sensitive... and preferred to be shot offhand, vs rested. also, i noticed that it did not like a dirty barrel. it required patches every 150 rounds or so. The one that i was shooting, seemed to foul up hte barrel to the point you could almost NOT see the rifling after 200+ rounds. I made sure to not go that far without patches. others may not see this. it also definatly seemed to prefer the heavier pellets instead of lighter ones.
its also a !@#$!! to cock.

Am going to send my XL back today - unable to get groups less than 1" at 30'. Get two or three nicely grouped, then fliers. Tried all sorts of pellets and holds. Crosman/Benjamin very helpful, nice. Only downside, no .22 thumper for about 3 weeks.... I am glad to hear they can be extremely accurate. Mine was covered with what looked like baked on used automotive oil that took forever to get out of the barrel. +1 on the cocking. I can go into the cold garage and within a few minutes my heavy shirt is off and I'm counting my pulse by watching the reticle jump around!

well, before you send it back, try cleaning the barrel out really good with orange goo gone. see what that does as far as accuracy. then send it back.

OK 454 - I'll give it a "shot". It started to group fairly well then the accuracy went away. Sounds like a major disassembly and a total de-greasing/cleaning might be a good idea if the barrel cleaning helps. What is causing the fouling? What pellets are you shooting? At 30' I'm getting 1" groups - 2 or 3 nicely together, then a couple of fliers. I'm using JSB Diablo Jumbo Heavy Exacts and Crosman Premier 14.3's, and have shot around 600 pellets thru it. By comparison, my Cometa Fusion in .177 stacks them (5 shots) in 1/8" center to center groups at the same distance....

Sound's Spotface that maybe your seal is bad. It seem's to be a common thing with these gun's,guessing it is an assembly problem over in china when they slap the piston an seal past those screw thread's? I also went an checked the bore of my XL an with over 1500 shot's it still look's clean( but then it is a barrel from an SS?).

i would say a bad seal as well... thats quite easy to fix in fact. also, improper lube is what typically causes barrel fouling... and dirty pellets... the lube burns off, and leaves deposits int he barrel. I don't understand why the gun i shot was doing it.... it was tuned and had a new seal in it...

Thanks Fellers - cleaned up the barrel, same - O - same - O. It's in a box and on its way to meet its maker. Mine smoked for a while when it was new. I'm down to two cigars a week myself.

Like Ed said It's a very easy gun to take apart(no compressor needed) an you can get a new seal from JM's site,if you like the gun you have?

Yep, I am a gizmologist and love fiddling with stuff. I've built my own airplane, r/c airplanes, hang gliders, got a pretty nice shop, built guitars, and am really good at fixing stuff my wife destroys in the most amazing and creative ways, but just getting started in AG's. So far have made my own duct putty pellet trap and "Artillery Carriage" benchrest. As far as working on AG's, I do know that it will probably take me three tries to get it right the first time! I have put a GRT III trigger on the XL. (Took it off before returning) Major improvement. Ok - when I get the gun back, new or repaired, I hereby promise to take it apart and do something to it. I know that help is nearby on GTA. Two questions - 1) what tool to use for removing the receiver cap? 2) What size seal, where do I get it?
Bill
P.s. my 1377 comes tomorrow. I plan on taking that apart repeatedly to replace/upgrade. Looks like fun from what I've found here.

Dave / Rocker1 has made a tool, hopefully he'll chime in with a photo of it. he took what looked like a steel bar 1/2 inch thick. with two holes drilled precisely in the space and size of the holes in the endcap, and pushed some kind of steel rod through the holes, till they protruded from one side about 1/4 or 3/8 of an inch. then spot welded hte backs.... they are on pretty tight tho... he cracked the handle using a long pipe as a breaker bar.... or cheater bar.... so fair warning.... get a gun vice

Thanks guys. A quick trip into the internet shows a "Face Spanner" to be a tool of consideration. Need to know size of drive pins and distance between to find out which numbered size would work. 454 - you got a make/model gun vice to recommend? Nathan - thanks - will order asap.

The spanner's are nice(need to make one), but I just used a set of needlenose an a large channel lock, had my son hold it an just gave it a solid twist, came right undone!! Now we both have worked together as plumber's for several year's, so maybe we just work well together??

Here is what it looks like and believe me that thing is tight good luck. Some have used a pair of needle nose plyers and stuck a bar through them and some have used two screw drivers what ever it takes but you do need a helper to hold it. Thanks David

Here's an adjustable face spanner on e-bay for $9.74 delivered. Since I sent my gun back I can't measure the diameter of the holes. Can someone check that for me real quick? You people with experience think this looks strong enough to pop that plug outta there?
Thanks
