I thinned out a couple--an R7 and one of my HW50S's--but I still have an HW30S in a Corcoran stock and an HW50S in .177.

Today I added a .22 HW95 Luxus. I bought this like new from Steve Corcoran and even though it has a pretty stock I ordered another custom stock from Steve to really dress it up.

I added a Beeman mizzle brake and Hawke scope. I'll install a Vortek kit in it this weekend. My stock should be ready in January--I dropped by Steve's shop and picked out a beautiful walnut blank today. I can't wait!

Thanks! I wish I was the one with the $$$. I just keep shuffling the same few hundred dollars around. Sell an R7 and HW50 and buy an R9. You know the drill.

What lead you to the HW95 over, say, an HW97 or HW 80?

That gun has a GREAT looking hunk of wood on it. I cant imagine wanting to change it.

That's an easy one Larry. Two reasons--Vortek and Steve Corcoran.

After my R7 stock turned out so well I took one of my HW50's up to Steve Corcoron's shop to have him make a stock for it. His HW50 stock design is setup to handle both open sights and a scope so it has a lower comb. I like the high comb on his R7 stock so I was looking at his HW95 stock, which also has a high comb, and loved it! He had an HW95 action he uses for fitting and he put that in a stock and let me shoot it. It's just slightly longer and heavier than an HW50 but not a lot. But there was a lot of buzz and a bit of honking while cocking though.

I talked to Steve a little more and he told me he buys rifles and uses them to fit stocks and then sells the rifles again after a while to keep from wearing out the threading where the stocks attach. It turned out he was ready to sell his HW95 and order a new one so I bought his rifle from him with the factory stock and he's now in the process of building a custom stock for it. The rifle has a few handling marks on it from fitting stocks but Steve said it has fewer than 50 pellets through it.

And because I put Vortek PG2 kits in my R7 and one of my HW50's I was already aware of what they're capable of. I knew they'd kill the twang and the honk completely and I already knew Tom had a "detune" kit to bring the HW95 down to 12FPE. I picked up the rifle yesterday and the kit came today. I just got done installing the kit a few minutes ago and the transformation is amazing! Zero twang or buzz and very smooth cocking. Just a nice solid thump. Really a treat to shoot.

As a bonus at 6'5" the HW95 fits me better than the HW50 and Steve is doing some extra customization on the comb and LOP for me.

So the bottom line is I wasn't looking for any additional power--so scratch the HW80--I was just looking for a fun to shoot rifle that Steve made a high-comb beautiful stock for, and it needed to fit me really well. I think the HW97 is around 2 lbs heavier than an HW95 and I really didn't want the additional weight. The 97 also costs an additional $150-200. The HW95 only weighs 11 oz more than the HW50 and was right in my price range. I was able to sell my HW50 and my R7 to pay for the HW95 and Vortek kit. That leaves me with an HW30 in a custom stock, a very smooth Vortek'd HW50, and a very smooth Vortek'd HW95 that will soon be wearing a custom stock.

Sorry for the long answer! And my hat's off to both Tom at Vortek (his kits really are amazing) and Steve Corcoran who makes a stock beautiful enough to make me buy a different rifle just for his stock. :-)

Thanks! It is a nice looking stock but if you imagine a stock like this one on my HW95 you can probably see why I'm changing it:

I dunno. Both are good looking. I'd just hate to see a stock that pretty without a gun in it.

Once I get the custom stock I'll sell the factory stock. I'll be happy to let someone with a drab beech stock dress up their rifle a bit.

If you compare them in person it's not even close. It's a nice looking piece of beech but it's still light colored beech with a heavy brown stain and varnish versus a beautiful, tight-grained piece of walnut with a hand-rubbed oil finish.

There isn't anything at all wrong with it. A custom stock will just look better and fit better. At 6'5 the custom stock will have the correct LOP designed into the stock instead of bolting an extension on the recoil pad. The comb will be slightly higher and be stretched back further to coincide with the increased length of pull. The grip will fit my hand better, the forearm has a bit more belly, and on and on.

The factory stock by design is a compromise in each of these areas. An attempt to mostly fit as many people as possible with a single size. If you don't happen to fall in the middle of the curve in height and build then the stock will not be an ideal fit for you.

I've been shooting rifles my entire life with stocks that do not fit me well. I'm happy to pay a few hundred for a beautiful chunk of walnut that actually fits me. Perhaps if you're 5'10" with average length arms this is something you don't give much thought to.

yep jdub has all the cash , i guess you beat petey out there haha but if you need a diffrent piece of wood its your gun and make it your way . heck we only live 1 time so make it as pleasent as you can as nobody else will for you

it's simply a matter of selling a rifle you're not really using and using the money on a stock. Instead of a race to acquire as many airguns as you can you change your mindset and go for fewer guns that you like more.

I enjoy trying a bunch, picking my favorites, and then selling off the others. In the past month I've sold five airguns, a 392, 2240, R7, HW50, and IZH-61 along with three scopes and bought two new airguns and a stock--the P1, HW95 and the R7/HW30 stock.

My collection is shrinking in size but increasing in quality--just the way I like it. And yeah, somehow I got ahead of Petey on this one

Congrats to both Petey and Jdub on the new R9/HW95! I have an R9 in .20 cal. and its definitely a quality piece with typical Weihrauch accuracy and quality. You two are going to enjoy yours a lot, especially Jdub with a new stock that's sure to fit like a glove.
