Can a Vortek kit really make my HW97k as quiet as my Benji NP?

I love my new HW97k, it is very accurate, it has the awesome Rekord trigger, but it is slightly "twangy".  This noise doesn't seem to affect the accuracy, because it is more accurate than my Benj Trail NP. But the Benji is much quieter. So can a Vortek kit and heavy tar lube on the spring actually make the HW as quiet as the Benji?

Thanks for the Vortek info Tom. I have already researched them thoroughly. I love everything about my HW97k except for the "SPROING" when I fire it. Can it ever be as quiet as my Benji NP?

Can a Vortek system make my HW97 less twangy?  Heck yeah my friend!  Or at least mine did.  But I view myself as a expert tuner.......just joking of course.  It took all the twang out and now it is a solid "thud"!

Have you installed the Vortek PG2 kit yet? 12 fpe or 15 fpe? did it do the 'trick'?

I, same, have the twang issue with my HW97k, I don't want to take it apart before knowing the benefit of doing the tuning.

I'm a little confused about Twanging sounds on the 97.  I just bought a 97 last month from AoA.  It's in .177.  It's quiet and powerful and exhibits none of the characteristics described in these posts.  It makes no sounds like anything I've heard described as twangy.  I know what you mean about the twangy sounds from other springers.  I've had cheaper springers before.  Mine doesn't do it.

The sproing most times is cause the spring is not rotating perfectly and vibrating against the piston.

My rws rifles have those kits, quiet, accurate and a pleasure to shoot.

Yasmin, no I haven't vorteked it yet. It shoots so well that I think I'm going to wait a while before I do it.

I was out at the range today, listening especially for any type of twang sound.  I'm still trying to find the best pellets for it.  So far, I've tried H&N FTT's 8.64's, Crosman Ultra magnums 10.5, Air Arms Field Heavies 10.3's and the H&N Barracuda Match 10.65's.  The Crosman pellets look like it was shot with a  shotgun.  The best groups have been with the H&N's and the AA's.  I'm just getting a solid thunk when firing it.

Twang is often standard for a stock gun.  Diana's have been coming fairly dry the last few years and I've heard complaints about HW's twanging, yours aside.  Right off the bat, a lube tune with JM's heavy tar (sparingly applied) should cure a lot of it.  The Vortek kit, with that tube which surrounds the spring will go even further.  It's hard to compare a spring gun to a gas pistoned.  My NPSS has no twang whatsoever since it doesn't have a coiled spring.  That said, compared to the Theoben pistoned RX, it's less well behaved.

I am not sure I understand why a premium air rifle apparently needs so much work done to it before it will work properly. New here but have been shooting Air Rifles for some time. Mainly for pest animals. Have moved up to some fine rifles now and sold some of the earlier shooting iron. Don't undertand if the feeling is that most come from the store needing some kind of work?

I hear what you are saying and still wonder myself why a top quality gun can come improperly lubricated, with a bent spring and possibly metal particles floating around in the compression chamber. But, some types of tunes do really improve on these guns. If you are the average buyer who shoots the gun periodically for recreation only and it sits in a closet most of the time, then a tune is totally unnecessary.

I had a full tune on an R7. It was not all twangy like some. When the rifle returned to me, the thing I noticed most was how much the trigger was improved. aImproved as in awesome. On the other hand, I noticed no difference in the smoothness of the shot cycle. My tuner told me that a smooth shot cycle in a factory rifle means your spring is bent or broken and rubbing against the side of the piston. That condition stops spring twang but kills consistency. Mine was apparently bent like a corkscrew. Did I get a decent value with a tune that cost as much as the gun? They jury is still out, but I know this rifle will function for many, many years without any problems. It is wildly accurate and much of that can be attributed to the trigger tune.

Sitting on an HW97 right now and understand fully the twangy thing. Had the trigger tuned before I revceived it. Shoots great, but a DIY tune with a Vortek kit, assuming it really is that good, is a much better deal than sending it out. I have experienced the night and day difference of a simple trigger tune. I now want that same experience for the shot cycle.

Zelph, if you read my OP, it said that nothing is wrong with my gun, I just wanted it to be a little quieter. Out of the box, it is dead on accurate with an awesome trigger and smooth shot cycle. I haven't do e anything yet because it does shoot so well. I paid $$$ because I know the HW97k had a reputation as an awesome target rifle. I have my Benji NP for sale.

Must agree with breakfastchef , if you shoot once in a while, no tuning with HW97 needed, probably no HW97 needed either.

It will get better once broken in. I donīt agree you guys on that other matter though : Everybody needs a HW97 !

Paul Watts put a JM kit in mine and did a full tune. Not only is it quieter the recoil is almost gone. I use CPLs. At 10 yards I get one hole results. Not hold sensitive either.
