Inserting a .177 steel BB into the base of a .22 cal lead pellet?

I was reading on another forum where a poster was claiming he would insert a .22 cal pellet into his rifle, and then push a .177 steel BB into the base.  He claimed that this gave him the benefit of a much heavier, harder-hitting pellet (19.5 gr total weight) with added penetration and killing power on game.

I'm wondering if anyone here has ever heard of this, or even done it before?  So long as the BB stayed inside the lead skirt of the pellet, it shouldn't damage the barrel, right?  Also, wouldn't the extra weight in the rear of the pellet mess up accuracy?

I never heard of it and I don't think I'll be trying it.

In a spring rifle. it would increase the weight and resistance, shortening spring life.

After exiting the muzzle, the bb and the pellet would either separate and follow different trajectories, or if the bb was "embedded" in the skirt, the pellet would be unbalanced. Hard to see an upside to this... the pellets will go cleanly through most airgun game already.

There is a Gamo Pellet that is basically a BB embedded in a pellet.  Good luck hitting anything with it!  I bought a tin and I can't find any of my guns that like them.  At 10 meters they are fine, but as soon as they hit the longer ranges my groups looked like i was using a shotgun.  

I haven't tried them in my RWS 350 yet though, I'll do some tests and post a result.

Gamo Rockets come in .177 & .22 and flatten out VERY well. I've shot and retrieved them from my pellet trap. Most times the copper ball stays with the lead but sometimes they seperate on impact. And as Randy says, check your gun with a few rounds before buying a bunch of these. They shoot VERY well in several of my guns but not all. From the testing I've done, if they are accurate in your gun, they are DEVASTATING downrange.

i tried it
added a lil glue inside the skirt to hold the bb
it did get better penetration at the expense of accuracy
not worth the trouble to me
if you have some bbs laying around try it and let us know what you think

You would think they would be perfect for hunting raccoons or possums.  That harder tip could help you get through the skull and if it seperated, it would just cause more damage.  Normally I use the Crossman pellets on those critters due to the hardness.  

It is worth testing in your gun.  Now I'm curious to try them in my other .22 guns just to do a comparison.

Gamo rockets are a different idea: the steel ball is in the front.  So you have basically the same aerodynamics as a heavy domed pellet with a flared skirt.



What the original post is talking about is putting a BB "up the skirt" of a normal pellet.
This would shift the weight distribution to the rear, and the skirt wouldn't provide any stability (my opinion).
If the BB and pellet stayed together -- which I doubt -- it would likely tumble.
More likely, they would separate and scatter.

i have gamo rockets that i use in my 1377 for short range pesting
i was shooting a bottle @15yds with my 30+fpe pistol with monster pellets and they were just flattening switched to the daisy 880 with a rocket shattered the bottle no problem
i can give gamo that. the rocket is definitely a penetrator

And I would think filling the skirt will eliminate the cavity that catches and holds the air pressure as the piston pushes the air. So, there would be a GREAT loss of velocity, IMO. And yes, then there's the tumbling effect of a back heavy pellet. Don't think I'm curious enough to try it.

My .177 Gamo CFX gets acceptable accuracy with the Gamo Rocket pellets.
Can't say that of the .22 CFX, though.
They would definitely crack some skulls on larger critters, though.

If you have a .22 cal pellet gun try it and let us know how it goes.  I can't see the advantage though.

 I don't think myself I would try that the riflings in ags is very soft and I would not even consider messing that up to try that  and I can see no way it would be accurate it has thrown the balance of the pellet way off  but this is my opinion  and not in my ags. Thanks David

First, this sounds bass akwards to me.  I had thought about taking a .22 and cupping a BB in the front some years ago.  I will let Gamo have the credit for that one. 

Second, guys, please don't post ideas about exploding pellets, etc, on the forums.  Lots of Darwinians about these days, need I say more?  8-)

Amen, Red. I cringe every time I see those exploding pellets (or other homemade ammo) videos on you tube.
If you want to shoot something with real exploding projectiles, join the US Military!

I have shot said .177BB behind several different .22 cal. pellets in my TF99 springer and TF78Gold PCP @ 30ft. & 60ft. @ 60ft. the springer would drift occasionally 1/4-3/8ths in. Head shot & center punched Jay's, Starlings, Sparrow's @ said ranges and a little farther on occasion. Air pushs the BB into the skirt causing it to expand slightly more than w/o it. This is most efficient with the heavies in .22 cal. What I have found is that the Crossman Destroyer and Roundnose,RWS SuperHP'S in .177 Will fit perfect in the skirt of a .22 Crow Mag. after a couple of hand held drill bit #17(.173") to a depth of approx. 1mm. These are the most accurate or equal to all the heavy premium factory loads (22grn.&^), 8 in all, I've tested. Devastating on small critters such as birds. I've yet to recover one from game as they were all head shots leaving only remnants of a pecker with it's brow and once w/eyes. The center punched Jay exploded and wafted to the ground like a dry maple leaf. Another critter got to it before I and skeedaddled. Another blog I'll tell of pinching lead from .22LRHP, Golden Shorts and Pointed 6mm Dynamit Nobel Spitzkugeln. Their hollow w/no base, if you like. Not reccomended for springers.

 I do not think exploding pellets is safe especially for some of the young minds we have on the GTA and as far as bbs inside a pellet , I can't grasp that idea at all if I need something heaver than that  and you are shooting at something that big that needs that I suggest you use a powder burner.Some one needs to explain to me why you need a bb in side the rear of a pellet, I can see the possibility of it pushing that bb through the pellet  and possibly sticking in the barrel.
