Bench time lately has really been a premium. Just too much going on with work and family to even make it down TO my shop. I had a thought of something I wanted to make on my lathe just to help me get familiar with it. I ordered several different consumables, indexible boring bar set and all kinds of cutters and other tooling items. I ordered some brass rod and some aluminum rod as well as tubing for future projects. But the first REAL metal chips were just for fun.
My Hatsan AT44 came with a threaded fill probe that I had to attach a Foster adapter to. So just for fun, I decided to make a one piece fill probe with a Foster end without having to thread it. LOL
Sorry for the picture quality, used my cell phone again.

I KNOW I had too much material sticking out of the chuck. I need a steady rest for longer parts and will probably get one soon. But for now I just take it slow and don't take too big of a cut on the part.
Now if I can just get a little more free time to play with that darn milling machine. LOL
I know it's not a BIG item but I'm very happy with how it turned out. It was fun to do also, stress relief.

Beautiful work, but making a male Foster out of brass is a really bad idea.... The brass is not hard/strong enough and you will likely find the balls in the female fitting bite into it (making it hard to remove), or worse, pull out.... I should add that this is hearsay, but you can get paintball QD fittings in brass and I've been told to never usee them on HPA.... The Ninja fosters are hardened and rated at 6000 psi IIRC.... Voltar1 on the CAF makes 1-piece fill probes from stainless for the Hatsans....

I figured brass was hard enough to do the job. I'm not using it at 6000psi but for maybe 2500psi max. Would have thought it would handle that. I inserted and removed it from the Foster quick connect a few times. Seemed to work fine. But if it's unsafe, I guess it's now just eye candy and a practice piece.

Outstanding work Dez. Even if it turns out it is not the right material it is a fantastic job you did. I want my lathe back...

It is always good that someone brings up safety issues. I would of never known.

It's the 18K Yield strength as fabricated that could bite you.... The balls in the female put a lot of pressure on a very small area once the fitting is pressurized.... Even mild steel has a yield strength of 44K.... Like I said, I've never done it, I've just seen lots of warnings about not using brass for male Fosters....

Many thanks Bob. I'm not a metallurgist and just getting started in machining. I have a LOT to learn. It looks purdy and was good practice but I'm not going to chance it under 3K psi to see if it works.

Looks great Dez, just a lil hint on knurling, if you would have ran a deeper pass with the knurling tool you would have gotten a nice diamond pattern like this one.

But hey my first knurling project came out like that and I was still a happy camper. On your particular piece I probably would have krurled first and then machine the rest of it, to get the heavier bite your work piece needs to have enough meat on it to withstand the pressure. I also use the autofeed on my lathe but you MUST be careful it is easy to run the saddle into the chuck, pay attention!!!

Zip there are differences in quality of knurling tools. He has the same tool I have and my knurling is not as deep either. His work is awsome IMO.

Bob, my fill adaptor on my AT-44 W .22 looks to be brass. It could be a mixture of alloys. But does look to be brass. Could also have a gold coating on it too.

As for the knurling, it was my first attempt and I confess I didn't go deep enough. At the time I was so excited to do it at all, I just didn't go deeper.
As for the knurling FIRST, I was not comfortable doing that. To me, if I knurled first, I would then have to chuck the knurled section. I saw it as needing to chuck the bigger beefier part of the stock. That would cause damage to the nice knurling job. Just the way I looked at it.

My concern is the shoulder on the male Foster where the balls in the female grip to keep it in place.... I have heard stories of the balls denting and wearing that shoulder on a brass male, hence the warning posted about not using brass for the male Foster on HPA.... It seemed good advice to me, so I'm just passing on the warning....

Yeah I thought I would damage my knurling in aluminum (which is softer than brass)but it didn't. The only reason for knurling first in your particular project would be for strength but you might have enough meat on your part the way you machined it to get that kind of knurl.

And Gene that knurl was done with some cheap chinese knurl I got off fleabay. Far from criticizing , just something I thought I would pass along. Keep up posted on your progress!!!
