I seem to have just blown out my new hill pump

I just got the pump 2 weeks ago, I am careful not to go over 50-60 pumps without stopping (in fact, both of my guns are about 55 pumps from bottom to refilled). I was pumping the .25 up to 3200 on the pump gauge and all of a sudden, at about 3000psi, on a down stroke something felt strange and the gauge dropped down by 8-900 psi. I tried one more pump and I heard the gun valve open and then close at the bottom of the stroke. So I opened the pressure relief valve and a bunch of black stuff came out. It smelled kinda strange as well.

Anyone had this happen? This thing is brand new. Did I do something wrong with it? I have had a Benjamin pump for about 6 months now and only had to rebuild it once so far. I also wonder if any of that black stuff got into the gun. Should I open up the tube?

I also question the difference in the gun gauge vs the pump gauge a little. It looks like the gun reads ~200-300+psi higher than the pump. I have been using the pumps gauge since I got it but at 3200psi on the pump the guns gauge is right at the top of its scale. I would think that the pumps gauge would be better though. That being said, I have no way to confirm that. The Benjamin pump is pretty close to my .22 and the hill reads 200psi higher than that one too.   

I called PyramydAir and they are issuing me an RMA#. I had to order a new pump so they can just refund this one when they evaluate it or I would be down until sometime next week. They did say that they could send me a rebuild kit but I don't think that I want to break into it being so new

Man how ironic this thread given what Alex is trying to do with his Benji pump.  Not sure what the black stuff can be.  I think you may have a rare Hill Lemon! 

My Hill and the guns gauge reads fairly close.  If this is brand new I would definitely say you have a lemon buddy.  Return it for a new replacement and I would almost bet the replacement will work like butter on toast!

lol thats right i'm watching these hill pumps The black stuff could be a failed o ring.  They might have accidentally installed the wrong sized o ring or a low quality one by mistake.

Yeah, it was definitely not what I was expecting from their rep. I have to assume that it was just a one off issue but we shall see. New one is already on its way and Pyramyd is paying shipping both ways. I like dealing with a reputable company that stands behind what they sell. It was a lot better than my Benjamin while it lasted but I think that my Benjamin needs a rebuild (the second one in 6 months)

I didnt see anything on the inside of the gun valve but there was a lot of black on the end of the hose at the pump when I removed it so I will have to try to clean out the whip. Any ideas for how to do that?

I'd get a new one from them as a warranty issue, since It was obviously damaged as well.  Keeps everything fair and square, since it's all under a year old.  JMO. Mike

I try not to go over 40 pumps on mine.  I emailed Hill and they say don't go over 40 (they sent me a pdf that shows in pictures, a guy pumps 40x then stops for cooling.).  I'm sure over pumping wasn't your issue since the pump was new when it blew, so it must have been a defective seal or lack of lube.  But even at 40 pumps the pump tube feels almost hot.  Since i have a P-rod with a small air reservoir, refilling is a breeze compared to a bigger gun, 40 pumps usually brings it from 1200 psi up to maximum.  But if the pump feels hot that means the o rings are getting even hotter then we might think when pumping (The higher the pressure the hotter it is inside the pump)
I think the answer to a hot pump is buy two?  Lol
