How much power is enough???

The Delmarva silver fox squirrel has been a protected species since 1967. Weighing up to three pounds, they are meaty critters. Their habitat was originally pennsylvania, delaware on down through the Md eastern shore and virginia. They are now mostly on Md eastern shore and VA due to habitat destruction. I used to hunt deer when I was younger on eastern shore and the Silver fox squirrel was plentiful; I haven't seen one since 1973.

Back in the early 1980s, I deer hunted with a close friend in Alabama. There were several of these squirrels on the property where we were. Being raised there, he didn't think it was uncommon.

What we have (New Orleans area) are gray squirrels (although there are some almost black ones and the occasional albino) that run about 1 pound...some smaller and a few well fed old boys running a good bit heavier).  Just a little north of me (lost that hunting land when the farmer sold it for a subdivison) can find  Fox Squirrels. Down here, these will run about 1 3/4 to 2 pounds (or just about twice the weight of a Gray).  The ones in Va. (right along the Ky border, in hillbilly lands with no big towns...just little ones Like Norton, Pound, Clintwood, etc.) ran about 1/2 pound heavier (call it 2.2-2.5 pounds).  Guess they just have a healthier habitat.

Oh...while they aren't hunted, so have flying squirrels.  Should be flying chipmonks as they probably run well less than 1/4 pound.

Which is airgun related as the power needed for 1 pound critters is a good bit less than when hunting ones 2 - 2 1/2 times as large.

We have grey, red and the red fox squirrels. The fox type is about 2x the size in every dimension v. the red and the grey about in the middle. I have not found one particularly tougher than any other. Taken even the red fox type with a 13 FPE 5mm D34. A good shot stops them all, and a bad shot with up to 40 FPE 22 cal and they'll move for a while longer. Bigger you go the more critical the shot is, likely on an exponential curve...look what Ed has taken with a .177 B26...

SD, at full power shooting from 2k psi = 2 mags, & shooting from 2.5k psi = 3 mags(I have the strong valve screws).

AOA has a calculator to determine your fpe and fps on the left side of there web home page. It works well.

How do you determine what fpe your rifle is shooting?
