Couple of questions about my Benji NP Trail

Is it safe to uncock the rifle by holding onto the barrel in the cocked position like you're loading a pellet, pulling the trigger and slowly releasing the spring tension?
There is a lot of lead dust accumulation behind the plug in the muzzle end of the barrel. Looks like an allen wrench would fit it. How can I safely pull the plug and not screw something up? Specific instructions greatly appreciated.
Btw, I finished the deburr and reseal on the rifle and it is a tack driver. Couldn't have done it without all the good input I got here. Thanks and thanks for your replies on this thread.

The Benjamin Trail series has (as a lot of guns do today) an anti-beartrap mechanism installed. You cannot engage the trigger with the barrel broke down. You don't need to cock the gun to remove the shroud end cap or shroud. I'd break it open to verify it is not loaded and not cocked before starting, as a safety step. And it uses a 1/4" allen wrench to unscrew the shroud end cap. It may be tight the first time off and you may need to warm it up good with a hair dryer to help break it loose.
I like the anti-beartrap feature but a decocker would be sweet too.
Happy Shooting!!!!

Gander, I would put a cresant wrench over a rag at the flat part of the barrel (near the breach) when loosening the allen screw. This way you will not torque the barrel pivot joint. The allen screw was very tight on mine. I had to use a wrench so I wouldn't damage the barrel or action.

A lot of the time it will come loose at the second joint(near block) first. I am told you can still remove the shroud from that point.

Again, thanks for the replies. When I did my reseal on the Trail NP, I was wondering what the last little cocking linkage link that connects to the trigger housing did. Does it block the trigger from working while the gun is cocked? I couldn't see where it had anything to do with cocking or firing the rifle.

Yep, that slide and spring make up the anti-beartrap mechanism. If you take it apart, you can see where it moved into a position when that blocks the trigger from being engaged as soon as the barrel is broken to cock it.
