Got a refurb Blackhack from Mike M last Thurs. with .177 barrel. Mike shipped me a .22 with it and told me to try it out. I put 500 or so .177 through it and loved it, the gun shot very nicely as far as my inexperience knows. Last night I swapped in the.22 barrel. Fired off a few rounds and all of a sudden a really loud crack/bang, scared the heck outa me and I was wicked upset thought I may have forgot to put a pellet in. Shot a few more OK and it did it again, not as loud, but scary. I cleaned the barrel again using a mop and then a patch, the patch was fairly clean. I did not use any cleaner of any kind. Shot some more but it still did it once or twice. Just now 3 out of twenty shots did it. I don't know what to think. I also don't know what to call it; detonation, deiseling... Oh and I am using Crosman Premier Hollow Points.
What do you guys think?

Did you see any smoke coming out of the barrel ?

Since the .177 barrel didn't do this we can probably logically assume it's limited to the .22 barrel. I'd remove the barrel, clean the outside, especially where the barrel gets fitted into the receiver when it's installed, with denatured alcohol to remove any hint of any kind of oil that might be there, clean the inside of the barrel with "Goo-Gone", reassemble and give her a whirl. I'll bet that eliminates the problem. Sounds like some kind of residual oil may be the culprit.

I saw smoke the first and maybe second time, this was in the breech area.
I will do as you recommend. GooGone and alcohol, clean area with alc and bore with googone.
Oh and was shooting my RAM and it did the same thing!! &^^&! On the RAM the little O ring came out of the groove...

Oil residue detonating is the only thing I can think of and if you eliminate it it should solve the problem. I don't think there's any oil residue inside the piston chamber otherwise it would've done the same thing when you were shooting the .177 barrel. The problem only occurred when you took out the .177 barrel and installed the .22 barrel... logically that should identify the .22 barrel as the problem. Clean it like I suggested, give it a try and then let us know how you make out. Also, Mike is a great guy and stands behind his work 100% so you can also give him a call and see what he suggests.

I'm sure some of the other GTA members with a heck of a lot more experience and knowledge than me will chime in soon ad give you their advice.

check the breech seal, lay some TP over the area with the rear sight removed and see if it leaks, will cut right through the TP if it is, if it's leaking then need new or spaced up breech seal...

TP test, blew a hole right through it. Where do I locate a new seal or a spacer, please?

Try this first, pry out the one in there carefully, lay a round or two of dental floss or string, then replace the o-ring. I have new factory ones, also available at Lowes or Home Depot and harware stores, can't remember the number. Maybe someone who remembers will chime in..

Thanks Mike! Will do on the floss/string thing. Hardware stores in town closed, I'll look tomorrow.

Edit: String "shim" worked, did not blow through the TP. So far so good. Will go to store and get some O rings in the AM. Thanks again!

2nd Edit: Well wow, just put 80-90 shots through it. Not a hiccup, nada, not one. As a matter of fact I just shot some of the best groups in my life!
Mike, can I keep using the string, it's nylon kite string, or should I look at a different solution?

Mike, that's some pretty impressive diagnostics! Why would a faulty breech seal cause detonation?

I don't have enough experience to know what to call it but it was quite loud, sounded like I was shooting a firearm not an airgun. The sound came from the breech area. Since I didn't know what to call it I didn't! I suspect it was detonation though.

I am no pro....but it was likely NOT detonation, but rather the sound an airgun would make if it were shot with no pellet. The leaky seal is relieving the air pressure through the seal rather than down the barrel behind a pellet. Plus it is coming out close to your ear, where it is very much louder than it otherwise would seem.
JUST A GUESS......maybe only partly correct....

the rws and xisico rifles use the same seal for the breech, both have the problem once in awhile, will be trying to get some shims from the factory.....if anyone has a rifle that is leaking at the breech give this a try, store it with the barrel just broke open so there is no pressure on the seal, might swell back up and work correctly....

Lowe's has an exact match for B25 breech seals. I bought a package of 10 there and it cured my leakage problem and is working perfectly. Will probably fit many other break barrels. Was $1.80 for 10 seals.

It is found in the plumbing-faucet-o-ring section: Danco #96711, '#83 O-Ring'. The O rings were a perfect fit, unfortunately still a bit of blow-by(?). I will string shim this seal too, it worked for well over 100 shots on the other seal. This barrel is going to need a shim I am pretty sure

BillyK, did the string shim stop working? My MM BlackHawk in .22 had the same problem. I used your string shim solution and it seems to be working. But I was only able to put about 10 shots through it last night.

I got ovwr 100 shots with the string on the original seal. Did not get a chance to shoot today, but have all day tomorrow to do what I like! So I will report back on ow it works with the new Danco #83 O rings. Think we're going to need a more permanent solution. Mike stated he is trying to get some shims, I saw an article where the author made shims with punches. He used coffee can lids, they looked pretty good. I'll try to find that link too.

Did you shim the new Danco O ring? Did the string finally give up on the original O ring? Did your .177 barrel do the same? I haven't shot mine since I had Mike put the .22 on it for me. I hope we can get the shims and permanently solve this problem. Thanks for the help.

Today's update: Had to go to the office this AM, so stopped at Harbor Freight (gotta love HF). I picked up a kit of assorted Viton O rings. The #A110 9.19x2.62 seems to be working well. Put 75 shots through and so far so good.
