Weihrauch HW30S Info.

I have been looking for a nice easy cocking springer to use to shoot targets indoors at 33 feet. I am currently using a XS-12, but I want to move to a gun with a better trigger, and the HW30S has a rekord trigger that would be an improvement.

I have read reviews on the HW30S, and some reviews (and posts here) talk about the cocking arm rubbing on the receiver, and having to install a cocking lever insert. I am not interested in buying a AR that needs repair to operate properly.

So, has Weihrauch solved the cocking lever problem, and would the HW30S be a good choice indoor target shooting?

Your opinions would be appreciated.

the problem still exhists! other than that their an exellent gun for what you want! I hope Pete jumps in here on this thread he just put in an incert he can tell you how easy it is to install it really no big deal! JMO

No, problem persists.

Yes, very much. Many people never worry about the potential galling of the compression tube. Still, it's an easy fix and well worth it, IMO.

Have you thought about an IZH 60 or 61?  Won't find a better trigger and I think these were designed for 10 Meter in mind.

For a 10m rifle, don't forget the Daisy 953.
Or if you want a wood stock, the Daisy 853.  The 853 also has a Walther barrel and diopter sights.

As for the trigger, the stock Daisy trigger is TERRIBLE.  You really need to do the trigger tune (pretty easy to do) to clean up the trigger, then it will be a pretty decent trigger.  Although it isn't as good as the trigger on the IZH 60/61.

Here I am!
The 30s is an excellent AG... the cocking lever insert is no biggie. I came with a shortcut ..no need to disassemble completely. Super easy.
Although, I do agree, Weihrauch should fix that little glitch. I did have to disassemble mine to remove the excess lubrication..again very easy.
As a  Low/mid powered Ag ,  I believe the quality to be  without equal in it's respective price range. And no doubt you will be pleasantly rewarded every time you pull the trigger.  Oh ya the trigger.....very easy to adjust ......and sooooooooooooooooo SA-Weeeeeeeeet!

I will add one more thing... I too felt very much the way you do about having to work on a new airgun.
  So I'll share this with ya.....It's one thing to have to work on it to make do as it should...and quite another to prepare it for it's duty. 
Get your head around that and things fall into place.

I knew about the cocking-lever galling issue before I bought mine but after reading all the good reviews I went ahead and bought it anyway.  I have the delrin insert on my bench but am really undecided as to whether I want to mess with it right now or not. 

Like you I'm not crazy about working on a brand-new gun.  I'm kind of on the fence-though--about whether this is a *repair* or *enhancement*.  I know I'm splitting hairs but I have a hard time considering it to be a *repair* when the gun shoots like a dream and it pretty much everything I was hoping it would be.  I don't feel any roughness while cocking or hear anything amiss.  And the rifle shoots sooo nicely.   I'm sure it will last for years and years even without the insert.  I realize it's not ideal but I have the $3.50 solution on my bench if I decide to change it.

One of the determining factors for me was that I could not find any other springer close to the price with such uniformly high reviews.  It seems like every other rifle in that range had one or two *issues*.   So I either needed to spend more, settle for a rifle that had some negative qualities (like a lower quality trigger), or go ahead and get the HW30S and worry about the cocking-lever later.

I love mine.

I know many people here at GTA are able to work on airguns, and some really enjoy working on them. Me, I screw up most mechanical things that I work on, and therefore I don't even want to go there.

Sounds like maybe I should buy one, lube the &^^& out of the cocking lever, and enjoy shooting it! Do they all have the galling problem, or just some?

You're very welcome but please don't confuse me with some of the very experienced air-gunners here.  I've been shooting for a long time but I have very little experience working on airguns.  I've done more work on firearms but even then I just consider myself an average tinkerer.   There are obviously guys around here who know tons about all this stuff and have the skill to back up their advice.

In this case I just kinda figure the gun is operating as designed.  It's not an optimal design and sounds like it could be corrected without too much effort but I believe the cocking lever has worked this way for many, many years--possibly decades.  It's not a new problem or a recently introduced defect.  Just a choice that was made by Weihrauch.  And like many other sub-optimal designs there are clever folks who figure out some pretty cool modifications to improve the design. 

I will likely keep shooting mine until the newness (or the warranty) wears off and then I'll install the insert and polish up any galling that's already occurred.  I just don't want to risk dinging it up or losing a part or any of the other minor things that can and often do (to me anyway) happen with a new acquisition.  I'm enjoying it too much.

Really easy .....if you can take off the stock , the rest is downhill. ( No barrel removal)

Okay, I pulled the trigger (pun intended) and ordered a HW30S deluxe in .177. It should ship out Monday from AOA. I am really looking forward to target shooting with this rifle.

Congratulations!  I hope you enjoy it it as much as I'm enjoying mine!   I've mostly been a pistol shooter but I haven't been spending much time with my air pistols since I got the HW30S.

I came really close to getting the Deluxe version from AOA.  I love the checkering!  In the end I decided I liked the slightly longer forearm on the regular HW30S stock just a little more.  It was close though and I do wish mine was checkered.

     I was regretting spending the extra money for ordering the Deluxe, until I saw it.

   I have the cocking arm insert.  However after taking the gun apart I found the insert such a PITA to install ( it did not fit for beans) I left it off, lubed the chamber and put it back together.
  HW has been building this gun for over 40 years and have not changed the design. I'll just shoot this baby the way it came.

So, my plan is to shoot it much, and see what happens. If it is really a problem, I will take it up with AOA, or attempt to install the insert myself.

I was shooting mine in the house last night at 20'.  Not a true test of what it can do but a blast all the same.  At this distance my new favorite game is to tack up a sheet of white paper, take one shot at the center and then see how many pellets I can drop into that same hole.   A lot of fun!   I'm really enjoying the scope too, even thought the distances are very short.

I am very happy with the stock.

The scope is a Leepers 3-9x40 Red/Green mil-dot AO. I had bought the scope to mount on another air rifle but never got around to it. Seemed like a good time to put it to use.

Very nice setup!  I passed up that deluxe version because I was worried about how the exposed breech block would look (the standard HW30S stock is a bit longer) but seeing the close-up of yours makes me realize it looks fine that way and the checkering looks much better than my plain stock.  Oh well--I'm still thrilled with mine--it's a great shooter.

I've found that JSB Match Exacts 8.4 gr work great in mine but so do Meisterkugeln pistol 7.0 gr, and CPHP lights.  It didn't like RWS Hobbies or Basics very much.   I've been shooting mostly the Meisterkugelns because I'm shooting paper and prefer wadcutters to the domed Exacts.

jdub, that is the best looking set of grips on an IZH 46M that I have ever seen! Are those yours?

Thanks!   Yeah, they're mine.  They're the stock grips after a lot of shooting, marking hot spots, sanding, repeat.      They just have a few coats of walnut oil rubbed into them now.    It took a while but they're very comfortable and give me a very stable hold.   I also shimmed them internally and put a set screw on the back to lock them down even further.  A lot of the Izzy's have a little movement in grips--aggravated by all the force necessary to pump them.  This one is rock solid now... at least for a while
