One Step Closer!!!

Almost ready to make some metal shavings!!!
When we went to the annual Fun Shoot the first weekend in May, it was finally my opportunity to pick up the lathe and mill I purchased from Gene back in November. I was excited. But these beasts are HEAVY. LOL
These two pieces have been strapped down in the covered bed of my truck untill today. First step was to reinforce my countertop bench with several 4X4's. Then my most time consuming task was to clean out my shop and make room to pull my truck in. I have a LOT of toys and tools I have accumulated over many years.
Managed to get the truck pulled in and backed up to the bench.
Unstrapped and started heaving these thing into place. Now ONE of the reasons I have not done this sooner is I have been down in my back (could hardly lift my left leg) and in REAL pain for over 3 weeks. But I was determined to get them out of my truck THIS weekend. Getting the mini-mill out (150lbs) wasn't too much of an ordeal, even for an old guy like me.
That left this heavy beast (roughly 400lbs) to get up onto the bench.
Well, here goes nothing. Think something blew out (on me) when I lifted the motor end onto the bench. But I'm afraid to look.
But a little sweat and grunting and here she be, all ready for action.
The countertop bench is built in all across the back wall of my shop. I set 4-4X4's directly under this end to support the machinery. And notice all the boxes underneath? Anybody have a desire for about 1/2 million collector cards? LOL
Stuff I've accumulated and NEED to find a home for. But may have a million dollar card in there somewhere. LOL
Gene, thanks my friend. I hope to start making metal chips soon. And thanks to all my buds at the Fun Shoot that helped me load these things up. Thanks trucker Joel for the expert strapping job. It surely saved them till I could get them off-loaded. Stay tuned for pieces parts or widgets.
Happy Shooting!!!!
Dave

Awsome Dez. Hope you did not tear up ur back any further.
You are ready to rock in roll now bro. U be pumpin out some great stuff before long. Dang u must of cleaned all da oil off da mill and lathe...
Don't forget to clean and lube the ways on the lathe after every job and some white litheiom on feed screw under the cover on lathe. Vacum out the grill on motor after every job. Clean out hole through spindal often with high pressure air and clean the behind the door on left side of lathe often. Oh and make sure you get some 30 wt non detergent oil for lathe box. It is about time to change oil as well...
Use a magnet on string or wire to get to bottom of crank case to collect any metal residue from gears and bearings. "normal stuff".
On the mill, lube screw under bed again with white litheum. And on both dont forget to lube the gimbles. There are oil locations every where. just have to look fer them...
Congratulations on a very nice setup.
Gene
PS. Also put white lithium on gears behind the door on left side of lathe. They need grease. Check your jam nut on back of spindal when ever you clean out that cabinet. Visiually.

Be sure to keep us posted on all your projects. I just finished with the mechanical side of CNCing my SX2 Mill. It's nice to make forward progress on your shop.

Looks pretty nice in there to let the chips fly
You may want to move your valued pictures to a different location for sure
Looking forward to seeing your accomplishments.
Warning! Now that you can make what you mind desires there is no stopping and no going back! Enjoy the new shop.

Good points guys. And also decided to get a heavy apron to drape across the front of the area under the bench. I'll find me some sheet metal or something to put on the back wall.
LOL
Pictures are some of me and several well know country music stars. Had the pleasure to meet and work with quite a few when I was chief engineer in radio.

Dez,
You will get a lot of pleasure out of the metal work, but wow, will it not so good the time up. It's a good thing!
If you are going to be working to sketches or "seat of the pants" make sure to get a composition book of some kind to make your sketches in and then add your as-built dimensions so 6 months from now you'll know how to make a "second one" of the one that "worked". Loose sheets of paper and post-it notes don't hang around too long. Believe me, LOL.
Lloyd
P.S. Watch tracking the metal chips into the house
, LOL.
