On one of my Air gun forums here in UK a Crosman 101 came up for swaps. I didn't have what he wanted so I offerd to swap him cash instead. He said he would consider it this was yesterday. Today he acepted my offer £175 in your money $265 yes in uk it's what we have to pay for airguns of this vintage and as you will see from the pictures when I get them on here it's in fantastic condition I pick it up on Thursday.
Again hope this works

Nice looking classic. When I got my 101 I was surprised how powerful and accurate it is good luck and shoot safe.

"---the serial number on it is 6549J Can anyone give me an idea of its age"
****************************************************************
Sorry to inform you that the # you quoted is NOT a serial #. Even Dean Fletcher, the expert on all things Crosman, can only conjecture that it is a casting or lot #. And he possesses the Crosman records----such as they are.
His definitive work, "75 years of Crosman Airguns", is a 'must have' for Crosman aficionados.
The hammer weight is the final type from the last few years of production. The peep sight appears to be earlier. The problem at this juncture is that there are few 101s that haven't had some of the original parts replaced with whatever would work from parts guns or NOS.
It's a shame that the original wood is MIA----tho I admit to admiring that buttstock! If you want to repaint the cast parts they used a semi-gloss lacquer. My 1948 model (assumed---since I rec'd it for Christmas that year) was painted in black wrinkle finish as seen on vintage autos and MCs so that would be authentic should you prefer it.

Tom thanks for the information. I do think the rifle is a bitsa gun. By The amount of these that go on sale in UK I think someone either bought some pieces and restored it with what he had. Or had the metalwork shipped to him and had the woodwork fitted here. The number was on the pump arm. I have the book Tom I bought it last year when I won the big lot of air rifles and kicked me of with my obsession with Crosmans. The rifle may not be mint but it is in great shoot able condition and the stock just fits my shoulder nicely. And at the moment the metalwork is lacquered so I think I will leave it at that. To even get A 101 here in UK is rare so I am extremely happy with what I have and at the moment it's the earliest Crosman in my collection. If I ever find a less restored one I will try to get that it's just cost prohibitable what you guys pay nickels for we pay £100s for. Again thank you for the information.
Regards
Kevin
