Piston buttons ?

Hi....
Heres my version of piston buttoning...
Gluing bits of plastic to the piston
has never appealed to me....

So heres my approach...
braze a bronze band around the piston
then machine to .1mm fit..

I have always just worried about ruining the temper on the rear of the pistons that have a sear catch on them like that.... perfect for the pistons with the sear on the springguide/centerpost...

The piston is not tempered...its either 250mpa "mild steel"
or 350mpa...but its no where near 500mpa "high tensile"...
If there is/was any temper in the steel..it was a very poor efit..

If there was any stress in the steel the heat
would have normalized it some what...

I done my Kral piston over a year ago...its a thin piece of
tube like Gamo's use....never had a prob with it...

Wow Pete!!! That is Impressive!!! We've gone from super gluing soda bottle material as a form of buttoning, something I would do:),on the Polish website thread, to brazing and machining here. That's cool. Are we missing any other methods?

There was a machinist on here a couple of years ago that did the same exact thing you are doing Pete. He seemed to have very good results tested over several thousand shots. Very well done! I like the idea just as much now as I did back then. Keep up the great work!!!!!!!!! :-)

Whats the advantage of buttoning the piston? Is there a perfromance or accuracy gain?

If softening of contact points is a concern, you could always surface harden them with Kasenit.

 Piston buttons keep the piston in a springer type airgun centered in the compression tube and also reduce friction. A 1377 is a pneumatic (pumper) airgun which is a totally different power plant so no buttons needed in a 1377.
