My son shot his first pest bird this afternoon.....He used the HW-30 with open sights and the shot was at about 13 yards using a RWS R-10 wadcutter!
Froghunter
PS: He is still working on 10 pellets in a 1.5 inch circle at 10 yards before he is able to go squirrel hunting. So far he has 3 in and is getting better each day!

Can't believe mom let him bring his pest bird in the kitchen.
Great way to train the boy to shoot before taking him out on a real hunt.

Grackle?
I don't believe it's a starling.
Good way to get him ready for bigger game.
Those small targets will get him prepared for it far better than going straight to larger critters.

Congrats to your son on a fine shot. You've got a great hunting partner there.
I know we'll be seeing plenty more pics of you and him with harvested critters in the future.

My son gives his thanks for the congrats and he has shot 10 shot into the circle, so we are planning a squirrel hunt when the weather brakes. The bird is a Brown Headed Cowbird, which is in the Blackbird Faimly. I see alot of them in the fall and see the Grackles in the spring. There was acouple of hundred in the backyard when he shot it.

Thanks for the kind words and I hoping to keep him on track!

I thought it looked kind of like a Cowbird.
They are known to lay their eggs in other birds' nests, then they hatch and kick the other chicks out of the nest.
Not very good birds to have around if you care about your local songbirds at all.
I've killed two or three of them.

That's a fine looking young man. He almost looks like he is ready for Paris Island. He's got Marine written all over him !!!!!
