Some may not agree, but that is why I do a tear down right from the box. Address any little problem before it becomes a large one.

That looks just about like my R7's compression tube did after about 400 shots. I too ordered the insert from airrifleheadquarters.com and installed it after doing some filing and sanding on the gouges in the compression tube. Its nice to now have the peace of mind that I'm not damaging the compression tube even further. The gun probably would have continued to operate fine in the long run without the insert, but I can only imagine the marks would have just gotten deeper.

Thanks for the write-up and pictures of the process. Its really not all that bad to do.

I've had to do this on both of my R7s.

For a gun that has been in production for so long, I'm annoyed that this problem has not been fixed by a cocking arm design change at the factory. It is an easy fix, but that is no excuse.

Just got my Vortek kit for the 50 today. .My goal is to smooth it out and dampen some of the recoil.( Messed up shoulder)The Vortek kit for the 50s is designed to raise the FPS. Not what I wanted so far as the spring goes.
So I asked Tom if would make me a spring that was equivalent to factory spring.This way i could take full advantage of the Vortek PG2 kit.
Tom was most accommodating and very helpful in assisting me to achieve my goal.
I should have time to start on the 50s Monday. I will keep you posted.

I keep seeing these posts about having a costly repair if one does not fix this problem.

I just bought mine from AoA and their site states WEIHRAUCH has a limited lifetime warranty. So wouldn't it be fixed under that if it ever wears out?

I'm not sure, but I think chances are this will be considered wear and tear, not manufacturing defect, and so probably won't be covered under the warranty unless they want to be really nice about it.

The design has been the same for a couple decades maybe? Has anyone ever seen one that's "worn out"? I hear horror stories about what "will" happen but haven't seen any examples of ruined tubes.

I put the insert in mine and took it out again because it added a bit of friction to the cocking feel. I was in there again last week after a few thousand pellets to check the seal and spring and the compression tube--where the cocking lever wear takes place--looked the same as it did the first time I took it apart and polished the underside of the lever and tube. No bits of metal or shavings. With a polished tube and lever you have metal sliding on metal with moly as lube. The rifles are so easy to cock that I doubt the pressure exerted on the lever is too great.

Maybe one of the pro tuners here can tell us if they have seen one that needed to have the tube replaced because of wear. I'm not trying to dissuade people from installing the insert but I do think the guys telling you not doing so will "ruin" your rifle may be overblowing it a bit.

I know from the 50 I had it looked like u took a hacksaw to the tube after about 4k shots! an they were pretty deep! no they weren't thur the tube yet! but just looking and knowing this was happening to the tube was enough for me to sell mine! I can't see having a gun that causes damage like that and not trying to prevent that type of damage, some rifles don't get cut as deep as others but I'll tell you this if I bought a used gun from somebody with the tube gulled up like that I'd be ticked off to the max! I know their just airguns but the price you pay for a gun like that shouldn't have issues like that JMO, that's why I won't have a 30/R7 or R8/HW50 type rifle I like them allot but the tube issues arn't worth it to me! it makes more since to me to detune and R9/HW95 to that power level and not have the other problems associated with the smaller tubed HW's, and the price difference between the 50's and the 95 isant that much and you get a much better gun without problems like this! JMO

Maybe it depends on how poorly the underside of the cocking levers are finished and it's possible that they've been finished more poorly in recent years. Mine has two grooves in the tube from the initial wear but after polishing the underside of the lever the first time I opened it up the grooves look the same as they did several thousand pellets ago and they are very, very shallow. There's no grit in the moly in that area either.

I also wonder how much of it just wears in. Is it possible that initially there's a lot of abrasion but as the parts wear together they both smooth themselves out.

Mark, I don't question the damage you saw at all--you're much more experienced than I am. What I do find interesting though is that R7's from the 90's are pretty highly sought after and I have yet to see a warning about checking the compression tube for wear before purchasing one. Usually when there's a well-known defect in a gun you'll get a standard warning such as "model <whatever> is a really great rifle but be sure you check for <whatever> before you buy one or you could end up with junk". I don't see that with the R7.

I ended up selling my HW50S not because of that--mine wasn't showing much wear at all--but because I picked up an HW95 and found it almost as easy to cock and smoother than the 50. I detuned it where it's shooting right around 12 FPE in .22 and it's now *easier* to cock than my 50 was--it also fits me better.

I understand if people want to add the insert but I'd still like to an example of an R7/HW30 or HW50S that has actually been ruined through use with the tens of thousands of rifles out there that *don't* have the insert.

I should mention again that I installed the insert and even with just a very small portion of the insert making contact with the tube it caused some drag while cocking. I found the drag to be more objectionable than any wear it was causing so I pulled it. And yes I'm picky. This was in the HW30S that I still have.

I also had the insert in a .20 R7 I later sold and eventually it wore in to the point where I no longer felt the drag and it was cocking buttery smooth again. Upon taking it apart I discovered that the drag was gone because the insert was no longer making contact with the tube

so I pulled that one too.

I never tried an insert in my HW50S.
