I am experimenting with weighting down my 953C.  Still not happy with it.  I went back to my old standard (.22 mrod) and had some fun, I love that rifle.

Changed it up this time.
Shot the M417, factory sights, (front post turned to 0.030 thou)
aperture rear. 6:00 hold ("punkin on a post")
Bore polished with Mothers polish on a tight fitting patch and jag,
and recrowned.

Mine shoots better on 10 pumps than 5, what a workout.
Worked up a sweat with the heavy shooting coat on even though
I had the "air" on. Sweat running into the eyes brought back memories of
standing on the 200 yard line.

Shots 17&18 didn't want to "settle in" had to drop the rifle on both
and start over. Called the last shot, looked at the timer and had 4
seconds left. (came dangerously close to having a "saved round")
If it was not for the pumping, this would be a fun rifle to take to
one of the NMAR matches.

Very nice shooting. Think I'm going to try and polish the crown on my M4-117, and see if it makes a difference. My rear sight had so much slop it was unusable. I guess you cant expect to much from a inexpensive gun.

Using a rear aperture like on the M417 is different than using the V-notch sights
like on a hunting rifle. Looking through the aperture actually improves the vision
of even my old eyes. It is the same as using one of the Iris attachments on glasses
in pistol shooting.

In NRA high power "service rifle" class, everyone is using a post front and
rear aperture at distances from 200-600 yards. You would be surprised
how well it can work.

You shot dangerously close to your personal best from last match with a different
rifle this week. That shows that your skills are improving, please keep at it.

Yes, the rear sight leaves a lot to be desired. Mine seems to be pretty stable from session to session.
That is, I don't see much change of impact if any. Adjustments of windage is a hit or miss kind of thing
since there is no "clicks" or witness marks for reference.

I have always thought that the sight seems to be a little taller than it should be. My cheek weld is not
as solid as I would like. I will eventually get one of the A2 handle/rear sight to replace it with.
I have read where they are a shorter assembly than the factory sight.
They also give indexed adjustments of both windage and elevation. Not really an issue for me since
I have never shot mine at distances greater than 10 yards, but good to have.
I was hesitant to pay this kind of money for a 760 based rifle. I am glad, and surprised it can shoot as well as it does.
I would buy another if they would offer one that uses a 12 gram cartridge like the 22XX series pistols.
A 40 or so shot session with no pumping would be a lot more fun.

Glad to see you are still shooting in the matches, position shooting is the best, albeit hardest way
to improve our shooting skills. So much more involved than just bench shooting.
(not that there is anything wrong with that)

I never knew a rear aperture existed. As I age my arms are getting shorter, or I might need bi-focals. It's good to know that's an option.

Thanks! Shooting before morning coffee increased my scores by 10 points. I got my first AG rifle in January and got a lot of practice during the winter months, and still shoot indoors most days. Magnums are all I've had/used so I've gotten used to them. It's back to my NP XL this next match. One of these days I'll finish adding a pump handle to my son's Crosman 760 (unscoped) and I'll try that out for a match. It's just a lot more fun for me to shoot than to mod/repair.
