Broke the 30 FPE barrier today!!

Did some pellet testing today and the Sniper 125,in .25 cal., is proving itself!

19.9 gr. H&N FT in the 799 - 807 fps range
24.38 gr. H&N FT in the 729-731 fps range
 
and drum roll please..... The 26 gr. Predator Poly Mags at 722!!! 5 shots were all within tenths of each other..amazing!! 722.1 thru 722.3
My calculator said a whopping 30.1 FPE!!!
This gun is a keeper!!!!!

When the little 19.9 pellets hit that steel gong plate sounds like a cap went off then the GOOONNNNGGG!!
Wife hears it inside the house and neighbor too!

Just for grins,I put a 1/2 thick piece of sheathing board 6 inches in front of the gong,and marked the area.
 The pellets rip right on thru and bang the gong loud as ever!

Measured the expansion of one of the Poly Mag pellets after it went thru one piece of 5/16ths thick laminate floor
board,and hit the second... it was .370 diameter.. the center poly spike was still there but flat. A lot of shock would result from a hit like that!
Will take a pic and post later. This pellet just dumps all it's energy right there where as the other 19.9 and 24 gr,ball shaped pellets continue right on thru both pieces of the target material and beyond.

I have a couple of Webley Patriots - one Turkish and one English, both in .25 and they are in this same bracket. They'll be staying with me for good. The English one,, well there's not much I have to say about this baby, right..?? The Turkish one, will more than likely be very similar to the model 125. I am sure the Model 125 was borne from when Hatsan began making the Webley Patriot. They have the same spec and possibly the same internals. Mine initially suffered from the ill fitting piston seal and the seal and spring were replaced before any damage was done, luckily...

.25 is a heck of a calibre for a spring air rifle isn't it.? When you hear people arguing .177 vs .22 and which is best,, it kind of makes either of these calibres redundant doesn't it, at least in size anyway.? I still love my .177's and 22's but the .25's are in a class of their own... You DO, however, need a little bit of power to exploit them though. Sounds like the 125 has that edge too...

So,from the consistent FPS numbers,could I assime that the piston seal and internals are in decent shape,or should all these guns be torn down? I kind of hesitate to dig into it,at this time.
However, if there is a chage in performance,might be a good time to try the "yellow" nitro mod,as this mod progresses.

Well, some people say that velocity consistency may be a sign that things "could be" in good order, especially if it's consistently good up there in the higher velocity/energy reaches that your particular gun is supposed to yield. So, maybe you have a point there. Personally, if I had a QC plan to keep all my new guns in order, I'd strip them each one as I buy them and have a good poke around in there, looking at seals, springs and also for ground up metal floating about the place. Clean or replace them as necessary with either new parts or parts that fit properly and then proceed past GO and collect your $200 (carry on as per normal)... That way, not only do you find out just what's happening under the hood of that new rifle but you also end up with peace of mind knowing that if anything further goes wrong, it really is beyond your control and that you've done your bit to make it as good as it should be when new...

I haven't ever stripped a new air rifle down though. I only stripped it when I've had something that went "bump" in the night, so to speak (a problem). If you are like me, my opinion is you should stop the instant you hear or notice something out of the blue that suggests something's wrong, then either look into fixing straight away if it's a known problem or proceed with caution, taking special note as to whether it gets worse or not. The instant it gets worse, seek advice, strip it and look or just fix it... It may also be a noise that grows slowly and could well be something related to being broken-in.

On a couple of occasions I have all of a sudden noticed that it never used to make that sound when it was new, but now it does, especially spring noises,, that could well be nothing to worry about after hundreds of shots. Some noises just get more pronounced as it breaks in but on the whole the airgun should tend to settle down a bit.

Things that should worry you tend to happen in a mechanical way - "all of a sudden",, because they break and/or grind... Even bad fitting or worn main seals will manifest themselves in a mechanical way, causing a harsh recoil or noises thereof...

I have to be honest, I'm more the "If it aint broken, don't fix it" type of guy rather than the "let's going looking for something to fix (or f**k)" type of guy...

From my observations in my own tuning, if I can get a gun under 2 fps standard deviation, and no more than 6 fps extreme spread ((( over 10 shots))), I have got things good and sealed up, with minimal detonation.

When I have been able to get a gun to this state, it will shoot inside of .50" groups of five at 35 yards.  So far, I have been able to make the below guns do this.

The Hatsan however seems to be able to do it on its own.  Just go find your magic pellet now.  For .50" groups at 35 yards, it was the FTT and Silber Bears on my TH.
