Because it is a model of a steam engine. It's just a lot easier (and safer) to run them on compressed air.

Hi It is suposed to be a copy of a working engine (with a lot of changes)
I did most of this on a 7x12 chinese lathe.

I have been interested in steam forever it seems and I finaly did a model
The first with a lot of mistakes.

Next is designing a boiler. It must be right to avoid injury.

Those that are playing with lathes and mills.
You must work within the limitations of your tools.
Accuracy do as well as you can. measure twice and be sue before cutting metal.
Work on spares or scrap before changing parts that cannot be replaced.
Plan your work.
Learn to sharpen tools.
Get a magnafier so you can see the tinyest details.

Very, very, nice.  I love making things that actually "run".  So it sounds like you built it to handle the heat and moisture of  steam.  I can't think of a much worse environment for a piston and rings, although I guess you could throw some grit in there to help, LOL. 

What are the cylinder and piston and rings made out of?

For your boiler, I guess it will be electric fired ? I think of a pressure canner and those are only 15 psi.  I know you will use a reliable temp and pressure safety valve like a water heater does.  What temp and pressure will  you be operating at?  I guess the steam temp will go up with the pressure?
