Soup Can Question...

Does anyone know how many FPE's are needed to put a .22 pellet through both sides of a soup can?

I was playing around today with my 2240carbine, seeing how far away I could shoot through both sides of a can. . .She didn't do it at 50 feet, and she didn't do it at 30 feet. At 30 the pellet went through the first side and dented the second. At 50 feet it just put a dent in the front, but my PA was turned out.


Just wondering how many fps a .22 has to be going to get through a can, and how much fpe is needed to bust through both sides also...and not using pmags...those tips make poking through cans easier. I'm using CPHP's.

Yeah those things are pretty weak.  Get a hipac for it and take out the piercing pin.  That will get you clear through.  I dont know the fpe needed though.  Sorry!

Progresso or Cambells ?
Pointed, Dome or Wadcutter pellet ?
Can up on end or on it's side ?

Metals gauge, hit on the flat or in a crease differ pellets ability to penetrate.
If the can is sitting solidly on the ground it is less prone to move upon impact absorbing pellet energy better than a can that moves or rolls upon impact.

Somebody recently asked this. Many people answered and the general consensus was 700.fps at the muzzle with cphps.

That's true.... it makes a big difference if the can is 'locked' in place or not. If it isn't they tend to get a big dent and roll around. If it is, then it gets the full power of the pellet.

Also, you're right, if cans didn't have the grooves in them it would be a different thing to shoot through the metal....

Yes, there are lots of variables. If the can is just sitting there empty, a pow powered pellet would toss it around, much like plinking. A fast pellet would zip right through without rocking the can. Of course a pot depends on pellet shape as well. A pointed pellet would easily go through where as a wadcutter would need some serious heat.

I don't know the fpe, but I do know at 30 yrds that my Umarex Ruger Explorer, at about 470 fps, dents the backside of a full beets can with pointed pellets. And, of course, the Titan GP and Storm XT go completely through at that yardage with .22 and .177 CPHP's.

If his is .22 it is producing 10fpe at the muzzle. According to chairgun the pellet still has 5.5fpe at target.
Crosman pellets are harder, so more velocity would be needed for a soft pellet like say...JSB's
