What should I get? Pros and cons? Can I quiet a big bore down? I have never shot or seen one in person so bare with me! Thanks and I look forward to your advise.

Hey melvin. I got a .357 sam yang recluse for my first big bore. After having it for a little bit and reading about others hunting, it seems they all use larger calibers, but I am still happy with the .357 since for me at least there are few states that have laws making it legal to hunt any physically large game besides wild hogs and I think the recluse will definitely do hogs with headshots.

I think all big bores are pretty loud. When i first shot my recluse I was shocked at how loud it was. That said, when I am at the range, with muffs on it sounds extremely quiet compared to other firearms.

You can get baffle systems for them a few people make them.

I can't give you much more info because I just have the one big bore. Hopefully others can advise further.

Where are you at? Im in southern new york, but go to 2 outdoor shooting ranges and danbury, and naugatuck CT to shoot my recluse. If you are near by, i'd be happy to let you give it a go.

What do you want to do with the rifle and what is your price range? It's hard to beat the Sam Yangs for an entry level Big Bore.

Definatly Sam Yang in .357 or .45 to start off with, after discount from Pyramyd they are 550 Bucks, more importantly, there's excellent ammo out there for them, great variety and cheap.

I was looking at the sam yang in .357 I just want something that can take deer. I am going to buy 20 or so acres in the next year and I plan to hunt on it. I am open to other calibers though and I would say my price range is 5 to 700 bucks.

Nomatic Pirate. Where do you get your ammo? The prices on PA seem spendy to me. Am I wrong?

Dash Caliber makes a great .357 Snakebite .158gr that shoots great out of a Tuned Rifle

Matt's Bullets makes a great 100gr Wadcutter .357 that would be better for the untuned rifle

Dash Caliber makes the EPP/UG that it's a great all around bullet for the .45 caliber Rifle.

Neil Clague will make you a fantastic LDC for significantly quiet down your rifle.

I source my roundball from Track of the Wolf......454 to .457

Manny is right, .457s seem to shoot very good for mine. Groups open up some past 50, but when I have been shooting with the sam Yang, 100 yd shots on coke cans are normal.

Speer roundball work very well too. This old guy that I used to shoot muzzleloader with told me that I should roll'em around on screens, like the smoothbore shooters do....might be something to it, I dunno. It has always been SO accurate with rounds, that I never bothered.

Rounds make a small wound channel and really impart less energy, but I prefer them because they move Faster AND penetrate well. Punch thru bone very well, when they hit square.

Those look cool Mike. I have to think long and hard if I want to spent 1200 though. haha Thats alot of cash.

How bout the QBs? They arent to expensive. Are those worth it?

If ur willing to spend $700 its only $500 more and its gonna be awhile before you buy the land to hunt on so you would have time to save

Plus I the xp airgun models are custom made so every millimeter has been gone over so you know its golden out of the box and if there is a problem u deal with the company that made them and their made in the usa ( I think )

Talk to Randy . He is a hunter and has his own line of Corsairs . QB based full adjustable triggers . I have a .308 and a .357 . Very good rifles for the money . Sold here as hunting rifles . Used across the pond as target match rifles and they are winning there share of trophy's . Under $ 700 as well and they are made by Dan at XP . here in the US . Marvin

The XP-Ranger gets WAAYYY more power than that on low power.....try closer to 350-400fpe!

I say either a tuned 909, or the XP-Ranger.

I knew it was some where between 250 and 400 fpe but wasn't 100% sure about it

Lots of options for airgun boolits.

DASH Caliber is a real popular source amongst airgunners as of late (with some really nice designs), particularly with the Korean guns as DASH Caliber boolits are still soft enough for Korean gun use being that they are cast from lead that is about BHN9 in hardness. If you ask around, you can find softer lead than that. The last near pure lead EPP/UG's I got (750 count for $90 shipping included) was from SASS/BigLube Caster Ironmule (ironmule@wildblue.net).

The .45Ranger can go MUCH harder without sacrificing performance......makes boolit shopping pretty easy. It shoots up to (advertised) BHN22 .452 slugs very well (that is a REALLY hard boolit...way harder than what Elmer Keith developed his .44Mag loads with).
