Barrel Dampeners

Has anyone ever tried any kind of barrel dampener to cancel out vibrations on an air gun, or would they even work.
On a 22 LR, you are bringing the node point for the barrel to the muzzle by adding weight to the muzzle to change the harmonics of the barrel.
Does anything like that work on an air rifle?
Thanks, John K

Barrel harmonics are definitely a factor in airguns.... I have a series of muzzle weights that I experiment with.... and I have found that differences of just 1/4 oz. can make significant differences in group size with the whippy 7/16" Crosman barrels like on the Disco....

Did it improve groups ? I guess that's what I want to know.
I was thinking about machining a dampener, but it would be a lot of work if they don't help on a springer.
Airguns are so different from a 22 LR in their vibrations.

What is it? Like a navcon vibration rubber ring you put around the barrel?

I have one of these mounted on my M34P. The biggest improvement I've seen is it seems (to me anyway) to make it less pellet fussy, and even cheap ammo shoots well now. I think it provides a benefit and is worth the $12-$15 bucks retail.

Does that Limbsaver get in the way of the scope view at all?

Does the Limbsaver shift?
Here's a link for a poor man's harmonic stabilizer on a rimfire -
http://rimfireshooting.com/index.php?showtopic=2653
Someone else made a unique tuner by putting scope rings on his barrel - the barrel in place of the scope tube - and then put a scope rail on the bottom of the rings to hang below the barrel. He shifted the rings until he got close to where he wanted and then moved the base piece to fine tune it. Looked kind of neat. I guess you could do this with a shroud or some very small rings.

I have seen some very good results using the Limbsaver on RF and CF rifles, it might just be something to try on a springer.
Heck, I've seen them on some top comp guns in addition to barrel tuners.
I have thought of removing the silencer on my Gamo and making a fairly heavy, adjustable dampener, you need enough weight or they do no good, but then I need to figure out how much is too much.
That is where stick on wheel weights come in handy.
Airguns are different animals than regular rifles which is why I wanted to know what others have tried. It helps you with a starting point and maybe saves time, not having to find out what someone else already tried and worked or didn't.
I'm moving next month to a house with an indoor heated shop and a 50 yd outside range, 25 yd basement range, so I'll be able to get out of the Idaho cold and really do some experimenting.
I can't wait !!!!!!!!!!!

Going to try a de-resonator one of these days. If only to satisfy my curiousity. I think Limbsaver makes two sizes, one fit to a 1/2-7/8" barrel, and one for bulls. Going to start w/some O-rings and my plastic hammer and go from there. I've read of varying degrees of success with them and anything to help w/AG accuracy won't hurt. If not it won't take long to find out.

When I first purchased my Ruger Air Magnum it would not "group" at all: maybe 1" @ 14 yards. Tried a bunch of different pellets.
Because it was a cheap rifle I decided to experiment. First cut 7.5" off the barrel, leaving it at 12". Only lost a small number of f/s. But it became a real bear to cock. Still wasn't accurate. Put it aside to play with other stuff.
A couple of months later I machined-up a 1" diameter stainless sleeve that fit over the end of the barrel and extended it by 4.5", epoxied in place. This made it possible to cock the rifle without hurting my hand.
To my amazement, the gun started producing tight groups: consistantly 1/4" c-c with 8.64 gr. H&N Sport Field Target Trophy pellets @ 14 yards.
So in my case, it made all the difference in the world.

The limb saver does not shift on the barrel. It fits real tight.

Take a look at this Steyr Rifle, sliding barrel weights and receiver weights which, would also work as dampeners if... the Steyr had vibration, which it doesn't. Same principles apply, at least for dampening on the barrel.

Does the Limb Saver go on the end of the barrel or can it be moved up or down the barrel?
Also, it looks rubber. Does the pressure it applies to the barrel reduce resonation or does it have more to do with the extra weight?
I guess my question really is "does the type of material make a difference?

The limb saver can be moved up or down the barrel. Yes it is some kind of synthetic rubber type compound. I think it works by absorbing the vibrations. It doesn't weigh much at all, so I doubt the weight has much too do with it's workings. I have mine mounted about 4 or so inches ahead of the breech block. I found if I mounted it too close to the breech block, it would hit the stocking when cocking the barrel. I suppose one could mount it farther toward the muzzle end of the barrel.
