Thought some fellow 392 Steroid owners might be interested in this. I guess this is gonna date me, but I dug out my old chrony from 1995 (mighta been 1993).

It's been sitting at a friend's house for the last 5 years but fired right up with a fresh battery. I had mounted the sensors on a 24 inch c2c distance for accuracy, which is what Pact recommended back then. I know the technology has probably gotten better, but I suspect it's still within a percent or two.

I ran three 5-shot strings thru it with JSB 18gr Exacts and came up with these averages (rounded):

8 pumps - 652 fps @ 17fpe
10 pumps - 691 fps @ 19fpe
12 pumps - 722 fps @ 21fpe

12 pumps left a good amount of air in the chamber and the gun is stacking pellets nicely at 8 pumps so it looks like plenty of fpe for it's pest control duties. I'll check it out with 15gr Exacts but they haven't shot quite as well as the 18gr.

Thanks for the corroboration Stefan. I can't imagine why the old chrony would not work after all these years, but I also don't really know how to go about calibrating it either. It looks like the Steroid gets the published specs from Benjamin at 8 pumps but with a heavier pellet. Nice!

i have a pair of these roids, they like the heavier pellets for sure , mine dont leave air in tho only if its above 12 pumps 12 and under , so i am curious about that

Mine left air in it after 12 pumps and it's not suppose to do that with light pellets, so Tim put a new valve in it.
Now it only leaves air in it over 12 pumps. It dumps all air when I pump 12 times. But it all depends on the pellet weight.

does it leave more air with a heavier pellet or lighter? my guns are about broken in hey shoot nice, have a bunch of 312s and 342 s too , now if i use eun jins and pump it 14 times it will some air , i find about 10 pumps with a 15gr jsb it prints really nice out to 45 yds

A heavy pellet leave more air in it than a light one.

It's a little hard to tell, but the 21gr and 14gr that I have both seem to leave about the same amount of air. Feels like 1-1/2 pumps. More than 1 but not two. All 4 pellet weights that I have dump all the air at 10 pumps.

I'm okay with it the way it is. I like the way it's shooting at 8 pumps so 12 isn't something I'll even want to use. It's way too much work.

You do know that max pumps are 14 on a steroid, not 12 ?

mine will leave air at 14 when shooting those 32 grain eun jins , was curious tho why it would leave air below 12 pumps, it is a workout to pump it 14 times but with those heavy pellets it packs a nice punch curious to see if mr hollowpoint 2 heads would work in one of them

I don't know. Small differences in the re-worked valves maybe??? This gun is one-holing at 8 pumps with plenty of fpe for its intended use so I'm good with it. All this pumping has helped me make a decision on my next airgun though. I may buy a Discovery, but I ain't gonna buy the pump with it.

Discos are neat, I have about 3 or so. With an 88 cu ft tank, you can shoot for a year or so.

yeah i like my disco also , they arent too bad to pump, but i would definately get a scuba setup , those tko s are nice too especially squirrell hunting, they have no clue what happened , doesnt spook multiple squirrellls

Hey Tom - we're almost neighbors. Where do you get your tanks filled? The closest dive shop is in Salem as far as I know. Industrial Weld in Albany has 6KPsi nitrogen for 140.00 a fill and 8.00 a month rent on the bottle. I'd probably go that route myself. They're aware of airgun use by the way - kinda nice to not have to explain it to them.

I'm actually leaning more toward a Marauder. If I bought the Disco I'd want the BNM breech too and a better trigger so I'd be up to the cost of the Mrod right out of the gate.

how weird, i live in albany too....

there must be two welding suppliers in albany because i get my oxy tanks filled about once a week and ive asked them about compressed air for air rifles. they didnt seem to have much to say about it...

Millipede - not sure who you spoke with but the guy I talked to knew exactly what I wanted it for. He knew about the local dive shop closures and said he's had a number of inquiries for the larger capacity setups. Either way, 6kpsi nitrogen is available from them. They have 2kpsi bottles in the shop and don't have the 6kpsi on hand, but no problem getting them.
