I just placed an order for an RWS 48 and expect to receive it in a few days. My question is there anything I should do to this rifle before shooting? I see some suggestions to clean before shooting. Clean what? If the answer is the barrel, fine. If anything else, how should this cleaning be done. No string compressor so I'd be limited as to how much I could do (I suppose).

I'm really looking forward to having this gun and want to do everything necessary to have a great shooter.

that should be all that is needed but if you could get it apart and lube it correctly that would be good !

Went with the .22 I spend a lot of time target shooting with firearms and plan the same with this rifle along with some local varmint control.

nice gun bowguy as for the cleaning go to youtube and punch in rws 1000 shot cleaning vid and you can try that

In addition to the barrel, thoroughly degrease the scope rail. Get the best glass and scope mount you can afford, and do the same to them. A droop compensating mount is best, since most 48's have some droop (mine does). You will want a stop pin in the mount.

It's a great gun. It's also a notorious scope slammer. You need that sucker rock solid with lots of "purchase" on the mounting surfaces. Blue loc-tite on the mounting threads. As long as the scope stays immobile, you'll be in good shape, assuming the scope is heavy recoil springer rated. This is a challenging rifle for scopes.

Congrats on the new shooter. Your gunna love it. Once the barrel is good and clean shoot the snot out of it have a ton of fun then when ya wanna make it better get a vortek pg2 kit for it. Good luck and let us know what ya think.

Thanks for all the comments and suggestions, I'll definitely take a look at the youtube vid. Scheduled to arrive tomorrow. Can't wait!!! Yeah, I've been lurking around here enough to pick up on the possible scope issues. Funny, I have scopes on rather large bore rifles that could possibly be ruined by this air rifle. Makes sense when you consider the difference in recoil cycle.

I picked up an older D48 but in .177 with a T01 trigger. I also bought a D54 T06 in 22.

I recommend the BKL260-D7 mount. Too bad they only offer it in a 1 inch scope tube size. Its abit more $$ than the RWS Lockdown. I also have the RWS Lockdown mounts they both work.

If you have a straight one piece scope mount I would mount it up and with a centered scope shoot a target and see how much droop you have. I think to get scope life and performance your scope need to be as close to center when zeroed or at least its center third of adjustment range.

You hear people saying they keep breaking scopes on D48, 52 and 54 ....then you hear others saying its no trouble at all. My theory is the ones that keep breaking them are running scopes near end of adjustment ranges

Tom, where can I find the scope mount you recommend? BTY I have done a search on spring compressors and have came across a couple that look to be well thought out. Plan to build one shortly.

Bowguy you can also get a "UTG" brand mount that is made for the 48. It is a picatinny top rail that has a front stop that hangs over the edge of the factory rail, as well as a stop screw, that eliminates any scope movement...period. You can mount your rings anywhere you want them, for your best eye relief, that way. Get a set of 4screw rings (picatinny), and you are all set. PA sells them. I use them, and really think they're hard to beat.

The other two Leapers with droop compensation are adapters dovetail to Weaver. Couple versions both have ALOT of droop built in. Scope hieght ends up WAY above boreline so no cheekweld is possible.
UTG DN34=about 65.8 MOA
UTG DN460= about 54 MOA

Too much droop built in for rifle is as bad for scope as not enough puts scope at end of adjustment range

I use the UTG #DN460. For my old 48 and my 52. Didn't have to use much scope adjustment at all to get them centered. I also used the UTG picatinny 4 screw scope rings.

I've used the UTG drooper mounts on two rifles. One was the RWS 48. On both rifles, the "hang-down" part contacted the receiver where it shouldn't have. On mine, it was the "left corner" of the hang-down part.

To see if yours is a problem, take a sheet of paper and attempt to slide it under the hang-down part. It should clear. If not, take a file, Dremel, or some other tool and remove a small amount of metal from the UTG.

EDIT: I'm editing my post because I in no way intended it to sound negative toward the UTG. I use them and like them. It is just that they needed the above modification to fit properly.

I have 4 of the utg mounts and not 1 problem with them. Put it on lock tight the screws and forget about it. Love mine and at $17 thats nothing.

only thing i could say is shoot it alot, they take same time to break in , i have it in both 22 and 177 once they break in they are tack drivers utg is way to go for scope
