HW50S (new checkered stock) WEIHRAUCH - Quality made in Germany
«

I do a lot of firearm shooting with my kids but this is my first adult AIR rifle. If the photos show up can someone tell me if this is normal? The gun was bought online from AoA (good first impressions) and tested before it shipped to me. This is one of the newer HW50S with the checkered stocks. I have shot less than 50 pellets through it and it shoots great.
I suddenly noticed a chunk of wood fall out of the fore end. Closer inspection found wood missing from inside both sides. Before shooting the thing I completely read the manual, the stock screws were just a tad loose but not much at all. The thing shoots great should I worry about it - first thoughts are just take my Dremel tool and smooth it out but should a $400 rifle have wood this cheap? A hardwood would never come apart like this, it looks to me like that cheap Chinese bamboo stuff. Anyway could you all provide some feedback?
Thanks.

OT - I see you are from Madison. My Dad was born in Terry and raised in Flora. I spent most of my childhood in one of those two towns.

Send that rifle back imediately. I can't believe that stock got passed the inspectors. Be sure to send the chipped off pieces back, take plenty of pictures of the chips as they are, but mark them first. That way they can't be glued back on without looking like a repaired/refurbed second hand stock. I would also take more pictures and email them directly to Weihrauch as well. I don't blame you for being disappointed, not indicative of HW quality. Definatly a lemon.

Welcome to the GTA...give AOA a call. They should make it right. How ever it works out good, bad or ugly...do a write up in our "buyers sellers and traders" gate. The deals I have had with AOA have all been good. welcome Bart

Thanks for all the replies everyone.
I spoke with AoA and they already told me to send it back to them for inspection. I hope to get it shipped out tomorrow (Wed). My experience with AoA so far has been very good. I have spoke with several of the employees since ordering the gun and very satisfied with all of them.
I see complaints posted here and there about AoA but my belief is these are mostly from people that misunderstand their business model and have become aggrivated. I can see their point as AoA is not really up to the internet standard as what many would expect. They don't spend a lot of time reading email or updating their web site checkout process. They spend the bulk of their time talking with customers and shooting air guns. From what I can tell they simply prefer to do business the old fashion way such as talking to real people over the telephone and such. For those doubtful of AoA my advice is give them a try next time by calling and speak to them, place your order and correspond over the telephone.
So far my experience with AoA has been top notch.

This gun is practically brand new purchased January 12, 2012 from Airguns of Arizona in USA.
The wood inside the fore end of the stock is breaking apart - is this normal?

Thanks - yes I am already hooked. I got to shoot nearly 50 pellets and the way that thing shoots is incredible. It is amazingly accurate. This old man with bad eyes was putting pellets inside 2 inches at 50+ feet, open sights. It's so nice to be able to have fun shooting with the kids in the back yard without requiring hearing protection. They were shooting their (3) Red Ryders and (1) Buck while drooling over daddy's rifle.
The way that thing shoots I was just about willing to keep it as is with a little wood missing.

I took your advice and packed up the only piece of wood I recovered inside the box with the gun before I ship it, thought you all might be interested. I believe this is one solid piece that fell from the right side - here are a few photos:

It's too bad you had to send it back. The only bad thing I can say about the 50 is the cocking effort to power is too high. Wait until you put a scope on it, then you will see just how accurate they are. I like to put honey on my targets and shoot flies.

Weihrauch sure make nice stuff. I had a HW45 . it was beautiful. I'll be real surprised if this hunk of wood which has fallen to bits isnt replaced real quick with full compensation.Weihrauch would "knot" want this sort of inferior quality tarnishing their otherwise immaculate reputation . They've always been real pedantic about stuff when I`ve had dealings with them. Ive only ever had excellent service, but then , I emailed their head Office in Germany.I hope you have the same success as me .

STATUS for the forum: Airguns of Arizona made it right.
It took them a couple of days to open the box I sent after receiving it but the day they opened the box is the same day they fixed it and shipped back to me UPS on their nickel - all on the same day. Even emailed me the UPS tracking number same day it left the shop. The gun spent less than three days at their busy shop.
After AoA inspected the gun it is suspected the stock was breaking off due to loose screws causing movement which would be my bad. I read the manual before shooting and was aware the stock should remain snug (there are specific warnings in the manual) so I was paying attention (perhaps not enough) to this. I do remember a couple of times tightening the screws back up but it had not become substantially loose from what I remember, and note, less than 50 pellets through the gun. I am feeling guilty this may have been my negligence as the staff at AoA appeared confident these guns just don't come apart like this. I was told the stock screws should remain very tight.
Airguns of Arizona took another brand new gun (HW50S) and replaced my stock with the stock off a brand new gun. It is once again beautiful and shoots like a dream. They really tightened the two screws down this time, I can't move them. Also apparently AoA does not let any gun out the door without test firing them.
Weihrauch builds a very nice product they completely stand behind and Airguns of Arizona has won my business for the long haul. I'll list some of the names I can remember deserving credit, Darren, Jerrod, Shane, Gary, and Kip. They are the real deal with no nonsense. Every person I spoke with at AoA seems knowledgeable, up front with the customer, genuinely truthful and without runarounds - from sale to support.

That looks like a might clean break. My guess is it was a drying or "checking" crack that finally let go when subjected to the vibrations of repeated shooting. This really isn't an issue of quality but more one of what can happen when dealing with a natural substance like wood.
