I can vouch for the RWS 48. I have two. One in 177, and the other in 22. Both are as close to being the perfect combination of power and accuracy as I could ever hope to find in a spring gun. My Pro Sport in 22 cal is another near perfect gun. There are lots of options for you to explore. Dont get into a big rush. Look carefully at everything that interests you. Weigh them against your wants/needs and likes/dislikes. Get the best quality that you can afford. Dont let the stress of search get to you too much.

Diana 48. No doubt. check my post at 50 yards benched and at 24 yrds benched but less securely, at 730 FPS with 18.13g pellets, its hits at almost 22 FPE. I am trying a ZRT kit to see what happens... Yes, the trigger on my R9 is better, but the Diana 48 gets the job done and hits with authority...all for a reasonable price. Get a decent scope with the remaining money..

How about a Diana 350? Plenty hot and not that expensive. Will take some time to "learn the gun" but, once done, you have one of the best higher powered springers on the market. I like the RX line but would not pay $800 for one.

Get an RX2 and never look back. To me, side levers are a pita at times. The 48 is best left to bench and target shooting. The RX series guns are purpose built for hunting. If you look on the classifieds, they can be had for anything between $450 to $650+ depending on their condition. Do a WTB add on the GTA classifieds, as well as some of the other airgun forums The RX rifles are very accurate, with a much better build quality than the Diana's. With the right tools, they are easier to service than a lot of other piston powered air guns. The HW90 which is the same rifle, comes with iron sights, and are less expensive than the Beemans. Hth's

Pyramyd Air has the HW 90 (which is the same gun as the RX-2, just it has a wood stock instead of the laminated) for $660 new, which saves you $160 compared to the RX-2.
You could go for the RWS model 48 (as earlier suggested) and get either a Vortek or JM kit and still be way under the ~$700 budget.
Another option is Mike Melick has a new shipment of BAM B-28's coming in. You could get one fully tuned from him and still have plenty of money left for mount and optics. The MM B-28 route is win/win, you get the price break from buying a Chinese clone, plus Mike inspects and tunes it so you don't get a lemon. If it's primarily going to be a field/hunting gun, nothing wrong with going with a good Chinese copy.

HW 80/R1 will out do the 95/R9 and can be rammed at a later date. The 90/RX can be adjusted up or down if you get the pump.

If you want to 1 up him a r-1. If you want to 1 up him and do it at the same price or cheaper a 350 with vortek kit or a b-28. I likes me some 350's. They hit hard and are very accurate once you figure them out. If Airguns or arizona still has their sale on 350 for 198 id snatch one of those up. They also have alot of used guns as well as pyramyd air has used guns. If you go used that leaves more for good glass. Also watch the classifieds here for some great deals wiith great people.

The 48 (or 52, same gun) is not a bench gun. It recoils just like any other springer. Maybe the 54, but not the 48. While it's a little on the heavy side, it balances well and was made for hunting. Target gun it is not.
PS - Always someone recommends a PCP, LOL!

Another fine shooter and my favorite for targets is the 470 th. When tuned with vortek kit its a little pricey but well worth it. Mine has alot of power is not hold sensative and is VERY accurate. Shooting under 50 yds with it is not a challange and i regularly stratched it out past the 100 yd mark. Its an awesome shooter.

Sorry Red-Feather, didn't mean to ruffle any,. ......feathers??!?!
I owned a John in PA tuned Diana 54 Airking, and while it was an excellent shooter, I just didn't think much of the design after the sled system novelty wore off. The open sights were lame, and not one scope I placed on it would hold zero for much more than a shootIng session. Considering the design, it is nothing but a glorified 48/52 Diana. Hate to hurt any feelings, but for the money, there are better Airguns available. I once shot my 54 without realizing the action had slid back in the stock and the firing cycle wasn't any much better than a well tuned Diana 350. And we both know what a beast that rascal can be. Harsh, and just not an Airgun I cound find much fun to shoot. NoSir, the RX/HW90 rifles are a step,... Or a few steps above the 48/52/54 Diana's. Matter of fact, there is a nice RX2 posted on the yellow classifieds today. Set at 18-22 fpe, they are the strongest and smoothest shooting piston rifles you'll ever find. If I were to insist on a Diana rifle, it would be a .22 34 shooting at 700 fps with 14.5 grained RWS SD's. Mine is shootin 670's with JSB 16's. Much smoother shooter and plenty of power. Just at 16 fpe I might add

I have an RX2 in 20 caliber. It's an extremely hard and powerful shooter... but if you wish to scope it, it's tough on scopes.

I have the rws 350 .22
I bought it used from gun broker.com
the previous owner must of had a retune kit installed in it, because mine was very easy to cock.. super smooth, i mean like glass.
with open sights i just pointed and shot with dead on accuracy, i thought i was seeing things ... dead on bulleys @ 33' standing up rite point and shoot re load then point and shoot again and again same whole .
no harshness just heaven, pure heaven and we all know how powerful they are
the 350. rws.. 8 . 2 lbs is a beautiful rifle well made , like the other member said you can get one for about 350.00 now .. that's what i would buy my friend !
the rx are like 9. 8 lbs i believe to much weight for me.
