Unconventional night hunt
«

I have read allot of Shadow's night hunts and thought maybe I should add one of my own. My night hunts vary a bit from most of the one's I have read on here. My hunt starts at dark and runs just a few hours. The point of my hunts is to take my 6 year old son out and create memories, as well as harvesting food. We generally walk slowly trying to be quiet (not easy with an excited 6 year old) while stalking our prey. We spot light our prey and sometimes have to make a quick shot. I take my crosman 1377c and I never feel under gunned.
I do the harvesting and my son collects our quarry. We have been out twice this year, and each time we have had a blast and limited out in just a few hours. What do I hunt? Why does my son find it so rewarding? How can I limit so quickly? Because we work together. As a team, father and son sharing in the hunt, and in the harvest. I guess now is the time to post pics of our downed game.
Okay sometimes we use a cane-pole with a treble hook, but allot of them were taken with the 1377c. I know it's not a bandit or country rat hunt, but I find this more rewarding. Time with my son, instilling the values of a hunt. Even if it is just frogs.

Those are the best hunt's of all bradyman1 the one's spent with the family and your case your son.
I have no kid's but would cherish the time spent with one if I did, taking his or her's first Bandit hehe. I look forward to reading about you and your sons future hunt's and also to hear about his hunt's when I can't get out there anymore and get after em. Frog's are great eating and you and your son should be proud of that hopping harvest.

Ah frog hunting! We don't get much of that here. Thanks for posting!
I bet it's a lot of fun walking through the woods at night by the creeks or ponds, looking for frogs with your son. It's great that you can share that experience with him. How close do the frogs let you get to before they decide to take off?

It depends. If you don't spook them you can get within 15ft. or so. When they spook, they jump in the water. All of the one's I took with the cane-pole were taken from the water with a 10' cane-pole, but I had to reach for most of them. My in-laws have a pond that is over populated with frogs. It isn't too hard to limit out. That makes it nice, my son gets to see lots of action. When kids get bored their interest drops.

I really enjoyed your post, I think that's a great night hunt
I've eaten frog legs many times but I've never actually been on a frog hunt but it looks like a blast.

Bradyman, there is not much more fun than working your way around a frog pond with a cane pole, gig or rifle. Unless you are doing it with your children or best friends!!!!! Way to go with your son. Those are memories he will fondly keep for the rest of his life. Someday when he has kids of his own, he will relish the retelling of how he went frogging with his dad (you!) and all the fun it was and how he wishes he could do it with his own kids!!
I used to love to frog hunt about as good as anykind of hunting I did. We had a farmer neighbor who had a pond that I (as a good neighbor) requested permission to hunt. "There ain't no frogs in there boy," he said. So I went and he was right. There was only one frog and I jumped him in the same spot three different times around that old pond. But, the shallows were full of something that was working those banks like a threshing machine. I went back the next day and asked permission to fish, still trying to be a good neighbor. "Ain't no fish either in there boy, but you go right ahead," he said. So, with a can of worms and my old spinning outfit, I proceeded to throw a worm out seven times and would you know it, caught seven of the prettiest channel catfish! They were all about the same size, 2 pounders. Still being the good neighbor, I went by his house and offered to clean them for him but he refused! "Don't want them ole fish boy!"
A week went by and I thought I would go back. So going in, I went by the farmers house to let him know I was going back to his pond and this time he said, "I don't want you back there boy, I'm fixin' to clean up around that pond." That old rascal didn't care until he saw there was some good fish in there. I hate to admit that I went home and prayed for all his fish to die! I still feel guilty about that to this day!
Anyway, thanks for the story and pictures that bring so many good memories back. I'm sure they will be good memories for you and your son in the future.

Limit is 8 frogs per night. Thanks for the kind words and stories guys. I have very fond memories of fishing and squirrel hunting with my dad as a youth. The least I can do is offer the same to my children. And to be totally honest, I will cherish the memories just as much as he does.
